In the words of Marija Gimbutas , the name of the town is the earliest known historically in the Baltic Sea area . ref Gimbutas M. The Balts. London Thames and Hudson, 1963. ref The main goods of Truso were amber , furs, and slaves. History Truso was situated in a central location upon the Eastern European trade routes, which led from Birka in the north to the island of Gotland and to Visby in the Baltic Sea and later included the Hanseatic League Hanseatic city of Elbl g Elbing . From there, traders continued further south to Carnuntum in the Alps . This was called the Amber Road . The ancient amber roads led further south west and south east to the Black Sea and eventually to Asia. For East Prussia , Truso played the same role as Haithabu Schleswig or Hedeby for north western Germany or Slavic Vineta for Pomerania , Gimbutas has observed. ref Ibidem. ref East west trade route went from Truso and Wiskiauten a rival centre in Prussia which sprang up at the south western corner of the Courish Lagoon , along the Baltic Sea to Jutland , and from there up the Schlei inlet to Haithabu Hedeby, a large trading center in Jutland . Hedeby, which lay near the modern city of Schleswig in Schleswig Holstein , was pretty centrally located and could be reached from all four directions over land as well as from the North Sea , the Atlantic Ocean , and the Baltic Sea. Around the year 890, Wulfstan of Hedeby by his own account undertook a seven days boat journey from Hedeby to Truso at the behest of king Alfred the Great . orphan date August 2009 Dankirke was a Danish Iron Age settlement in south west Jutland , located near the later town of Ribe . It was divided into Eats Dankirke and West Dankirke. Elise Thorvildsen s excavations of the settlement from 1965 1970 uncovered the remnants of houses dating to the 4 or 5 century AD thus making Dankirke one of Denmark s earliest cities. Some believe that Denmark s first church was built in Dankirke, but generally it is agreed that the first Christian church in Denmark, was built in Hedeby around the year 850. The village was located close to the sea, which allowed trade with other countries such as England. Up to the year 700 Dankirke was one of the most important Denmark s trading cities, until it was surpassed by Ribe. History Here, in 449 the Angles are said to have boarded their vessels to sail down the Treene Eider river system across the North Sea to United Kingdom Britain . In an engraved map from the year 1596, Hollingstedt is indicated as port of embarkation. During Viking times, Hollingstedt served as a transhipment port for a ten mile portage to Hedeby on the Schlei inlet of the Baltic Sea Baltic , cutting short a long and perilous circumnavigation of the Jutland Peninsula . North Sea tides reached as far as Hollingstedt, so larger vessels were able to navigate the river, until a dam at Koldenb ttel closed off the Treene in 1570 . In the year 826 , Ansgar , Apostle of the North, accompanied by Viking King Harald Klak coming from Mainz where Harald had been baptized, went ashore here on their way to Hedeby. During excavations in and around Hollingstedt thousands of pottery shards were found, dating from the 6th to the 13th Century, evidence of a lively world wide trade. Halfdan the Mild Old Norse H lfdan hinn mildi was the son of king Eystein Halfdansson , of the House of Yngling and he succeeded his father as king, according to Heimskringla . He was king of Romerike and Vestfold . He was said to be generous in gold but to starve his men with food. He was a great warrior who often pillaged and gathered great booty. His wife was Liv, the daughter of king Dag of Vestmar . Halfdan the Mild died of illness in his bed. He was succeeded by his son, Gudr d the Hunter . According to the historian Halvdan Koht , Halfdan may have been the one to win independence for Vestfold during the turbulent years of 813 14. The Frankish annals state that the kings of Hedeby had to solve an uprising in Vestfold at this time. According to Ynglingatal , Halfdan s people gained victory in this uprising, and Halfdan is thus the first independent ruler of Vestfold. Horik II , also known as Erik Barn Danish Erik the Child , was King of Denmark from the murder of Horik I in 854 to c. 860s. After a brief civil war which nearly wiped out the branches of the royal family, legend has it that a single royal child was left alive, hence the name Erik the Child. The problem with the story is that at the time there was no hereditary kingship. Kings were literally shouted into office at the assemblies Danish landsting by the chiefs and peasants who supported him. Horik II, whose own lands lay in extreme southern Denmark, including Hedeby, emerged as the strongest of the claimants. Little is known about him except for few references in Saxo Grammaticus Gesta Danorum and Vita Ansgari The Life of Ansgar by Rimbert . Horik was probably not the son of Horik I, but a close relative, perhaps a nephew or grandson of the powerful Gottfredson clan who held power in much of Denmark. Sons were not usually named after fathers in Viking Denmark. During his reign, Danish Vikings under Ragnar Lodbrog and others began raiding and then colonizing England, eventually capturing York and much of northeast England. Although not a Christian, Horik II was tolerant of the Christians among his people and of the missionaries from the Archdiocese of Bremen Archdiocese of Hamburg Bremen who found their way north. Horik became acquainted with St Ansgar during Horik I s reign and shared his view that regarding religious matters there was no better or upright man in his kingdom. After a brief closure of the church at Hedeby by Jarl Hovi, Horik II was persuaded by Ansgar to reopen the ruined church and permit a new church at Ribe. Horik even allowed them to ring church bells for the first time, much to the disgust of the non Christians who believed the bells would frighten off the land sprites Danish landv tter and ruin the harvest. ref Arild Huitfeldt Huitfeldt, Arild .
