Multiple issues unreferenced December 2009 notability June 2011 The term hedgewizard comes from hedge witch , a term used in folklore for the cunning folk or local herb doctors who also use spells and charms to heal the sick. In fantasy literature , a hedgewizard or hedge magician is generally a Magician fantasy wizard of low ability, usually self taught or with a low education background as opposed to the common examples of being apprenticed to a mentor or studying though a structured educational system. Some fictional backgrounds identify them more with rural than urban backgrounds. In the novels of Mercedes Lackey , the term is derogatory, describing a character as incompetent, uneducated, of lower social standing or of lesser power. It is similar to calling someone a hack writer or a slob but specific to practitioners of Magician fantasy magic in these stories. In role playing game s and video game s a hedgewizard is usually a weaker wizard encountered when still at a lower level. With a limited number of spells and lacking in power they are normally easy to defeat. In the Ars Magica roleplaying game, a hedgewizard is any mage not of the Order of Hermes, who claims the largest monopoly on power. Discworld In Terry Pratchett s Discworld series of novels, the term hedgewizard is used to describe a wizard who specializes in the magical properties of plants. Although this does fit with the idea of a more rural wizard, given Pratchett s humorous proclivities it is likely here to be a deliberate pun on the word Hedge gardening hedge . For example, a character says If you invited a hedgewizard to a party he d spend half the evening talking to your potted plant...and he d spend the other half listening to it. Image Whitby Penny Hedge.jpg thumb 200px right Whitby s Penny Hedge The Penny Hedge is an ancient tradition in the England English coastal town of Whitby in Yorkshire . The legend dates back to 1159, when the Abbot of Whitby imposed a penance on three hunters, and on their descendants for all time, for murdering a hermit at Eskdaleside . The hunters were following a wild boar near Whitby. When the boar took refuge in a hermitage at Eskdaleside, the nobles set upon the monk living there, who had closed the door on the hounds. Before he died, the monk consented to forgive them and spare their lives if they and their descendants would enact a penance. Each year, on the eve of Ascension Day , on the shore of Whitby, they had to construct a short Hedge barrier hedge from stakes woven together, able to withstand three tides. The instructions stipulated that a knife of a penny price was to be used.
