The settlement consists of two circles of houses around a Protestant church, on a single main road with an obsolete village hall. On the other side of the main road is a little industrial site called Eindewege end of he road , containing tin huts and small garages. The remainder of the area is given over to fields for agriculture. There is one primary school and one secondary school. There is also a GP and a nurse physiotherapist. The village also has a fire brigade unit with two trucks. The Rijkswaterstaat maintains a winter depot here, with reserve stocks for dyke repairs. Friedrich Heer 10 April 1916 spaced ndash 18 September 1983 was a historian born in Vienna . He received a PhD at the University in Vienna in 1938. Even as a student he came into conflict with Pan Germanism pan German thinking historians as a staunch opponent of Nazism National Socialism . Friedrich Heer was arrested for the first time on 11 March 1938 by the Austria n Nazis. He founded a small Catholic resistance group and sought to amalgamate into one organised band the Christian s, Communist s and trade union ists against the Nazis, and as a soldier later came into contact with the resistance group Soldatenrat . From 1946 to 1961 Friedrich Heer was the editor of the weekly magazine Die Furche The Furrow and in 1961 he was appointed chief literacy to the Vienna Burgtheater. He taught at the University of Vienna . The majority of his books have been translated into several languages. In 1967 Friedrich Heer became the first winner of the Martin Buber Franz Rosenzweig Medal , awarded by a group of forty four German societies for Christian and Jew ish understanding, for his achievement with God s First Love . Heer Halewijn also known as Van Here Halewijn and in English The Song of Lord Halewijn is a Dutch Flemish folk tale which survives in folk ballad . Although the first printed version of the song only appears in an anthology published in 1848, the ballad itself dates back to the 13th century and is one of the oldest Dutch folk song s with ancient subject matter to be recorded. The story of lord Halewijn itself is even older and contains elements going back to Carolingian culture. Many of its mytheme s even range back to Germanic paganism Germanic pre Christian legends. The song s subject matter is similar in many respects to several Germanic songs circulating in the Middle Ages Europe, notably close to the English ballad Lady Isabel and the Elf Knight May Colvin or False Sir John and its variations, Lady Isabel and the Elf Knight .
