  1. The Helmsman (short story)

The Helmsman is a short story by Franz Kafka , written sometime between 1917 and 1923. The story deals with a man deposed of his role as helmsman, who complains that his fellow shipmates refuse to help him regain his rightful position. Plot summary The story begins with a struggle between the helmsman, who narrates, and a stranger who refuses to accept his position and finally takes over the helm and drives the narrator away. The helmsman goes to his shipmates to complain and get their help, but though they agree that he is the true helmsman, they seem to be hypnotized by the stranger, and do nothing to drive him away. When the stranger tells them not to disturb him they withdraw, leaving the narrator to wonder, What kind of people are these? Do they ever think, or do they only shuffle pointlessly over the earth? ref Kafka, Franz. The Complete Stories of Franz Kafka The Complete Stories . New York Schocken Books , 1995. 443. ref Interpretation This story could be seen as a criticism of a society that is apathetic to matters of justice or democracy, i.e. who should rightfully be at the helm, particularly when the new leader is powerful and charismatic. Publication The story was not published in Kafka s lifetime, first appearing in Beschreibung eines Kampfes Prague Verlag Heinrich Mercy Sohn, 1936 . An English translation by Tania and James Stern was first published in Description of a Struggle New York Schocken Books , 1958 . ref Kafka, 462. ref Adaptations A comics adaptation of the story, illustrated by Peter Kuper , is included in Give It Up comics Give It Up . 1. Rounding up

For the arithmetical operation rounding Context date October 2009 Rounding up is a phenomenon that occurs in sailing when the helmsman or tiller handler is no longer able to control the direction of the boat and it heads up or rounds up into the wind, causing the boat to slow down or stall out. This occurs when the wind overpowers the ability of the rudder to maintain a straight course. For example, the sailboat may heel over so far that the rudder no longer engages in the water, or only to such a small extent that it can no longer steer the boat. When this happens is dependent on a number of factors such as the velocity of the wind, design of the sailboat hull and rudder and shape of the sails. While not usually dangerous, the occurrence of rounding up can be startling to the skipper or helmsman of the boat. The boat turns into the eye of the wind with all sails fluttering. However, once the boat has rounded up and lies into the wind, control can be readily regained by steering the boat off the wind to refill the sails with wind and regain the desired course. Rounding up is in fact a safety design of most sailboats that can help prevent a knock down and allow the helmsman to regain control of the boat. An occasional round up may simply be the result of a strong gust of wind. If it occurs regularly, this may be a sign that too much sail is raised and the crew may need to lower one or more sails, change to smaller sails, or reefing reef in the mainsail . In smaller sailboats such as a sunfish dinghy Sunfish or laser dinghy Laser where the sail cannot be lessened or reefed, frequent round ups may be a sign that the wind conditions are becoming too strong for the boat, such as anything approaching a small craft advisory Small Craft Exercise Caution condition, and the sailor s should immediately proceed to shelter. It covers part of the Cockpit sailing cockpit and the entrance or companionway into the interior of the sailboat. One can usually stand under a dodger and be protected from rain , spray and snow travelling straight down or from the front fore of the craft. Together with the rest of the steering mechanism it forms part of the helm . It is typically connected to a mechanical, electric Servomechanism servo , or hydraulic system. In some modern ships the wheel is replaced with a simple toggle that remotely controls an electro mechanical or electro hydraulic drive for the rudder, with a rudder position indicator presenting feedback to the helmsman. Helmsman Helmsmen on older ships used a tiller a horizontal bar fitted directly to the top of the rudder post or a whipstaff a vertical stick acting on a tiller . Early ships wheels c. 1700 were operated to correspond to the motion of the tiller, with a clockwise motion corresponding to a right tiller motion turning the rudder and thus the ship to the left. Eventually the control direction of the wheel was reversed to make it more consistent with the action of a motor vehicle s steering wheel Citation needed date February 2010 Dubious date March 2010 The design of ships wheels probably influenced that of the modern steering wheel .
