  1. Henry II, Duke of Limburg

    Henry II c. 1111 &ndash August 1167 was the duke of Duchy of Limburg Limburg from 1139 and count of Arlon from 1147 to his death. He was the son of Waleran, Duke of Lower Lorraine , and Jutta of Guelders, daughter of Gerard I of Guelders . He succeeded his father in Limburg with the title of duke, but Conrad III of Germany Conrad III refused to grant him Lower Lorraine. He continued to style himself as duke nevertheless. Henry refused at first to accept the loss of Lorraine and attacked the new duke, Godfrey II of Leuven Godfrey VII . He was defeated. Godfrey died in 1142, but Henry was occupied with a war against the lord of Fauquemont and did not assert any claim to the duchy of Lower Lorraine. In 1147, he inherited Arlon, his younger brother Waleran having died without children. Conrad confirmed this, for he had promised Henry a fief to compensate for the loss of Lorraine, and the duke and the king were reconciled. Henry did not take part in the Second Crusade that year, however. Henry attended the coronation of Conrad s successor, Frederick Barbarossa . At that time, Henry was involved in a war with Henry IV of Luxembourg . The town of Andenne was taken and completely plundered and burned. Then Henry turned to Godfrey III of Leuven Godfrey VIII , but they soon made peace in 1155. Henry s daughter Margaret married Godfrey. It came immediately after High Renaissance and was largely the product of Italian influences. The Pericopes of Henry II Munich , Bavarian State Library , Clm 4452 is a luxurious medieval illuminated manuscript made for Henry II, Holy Roman Emperor Henry II , the last Ottonian Holy Roman Emperor , made c. 1002 &ndash 1012 AD.     File Schatzkammer Residenz Muenchen Krone Heinrich II 1270.jpg thumb 300 px right The so called crown of Henry II at the Treasury of Munich Residenz The so called Crown of Henry II, Holy Roman Emperor St. Henry II is a reliquary crown, which belonged to the reliquary of the Holy Roman Emperor emperor at the Bamberg Cathedral Cathedral of Bamberg . After the process of German Mediatisation the Kingdom of Bavaria came into possession of Bamberg and took the crown to the treasury of Munich Residenz , where it still can be seen today. This lily crown consists of six plates which are joined together by hinges fixed with pins. Each of the plates carries a large fleur de lis . The pins are surmounted by praying angels standing on Acanthus ornament acanthus leaves. Four of the segments and all fleur de lis are adorned with precious stones while two carry antique cameo carving cameos . The decoration of the frame with foliage work seems to be of later date than the frame.Due to fitting slots at the front and back segment it is possible to add an imperial arch and cross to the frame.
