At first he intended to study law but he gave up the idea on his father s death in 1794. He entered the army, obtaining a commission in the 12th Regiment of Foot , then stationed in India , where he assisted William Lambton in the Great Trigonometric Survey . Failing health obliged him to return to England and in 1808, then a lieutenant, he entered on a student career in the senior department of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst Royal Military College at Sandhurst . Shortly afterwards he was promoted to the rank of captain. In 1814 he retired on half pay, and devoted the remainder of his life to scientific research. Scientist His first major contribution to science was the comparison of the merits of the Cassegrain telescope Cassegrainian and Gregorian telescope s Kater determined the latter to be an inferior design. His most substantial work was the invention of Kater s pendulum , enabling the strength of gravity to be determined, first at London and subsequently at various stations throughout the country. The Most Reverend HenryHenry Doctor of Divinity D.D. 22 May 1846 8 March 1908 was an Ireland Irish Roman Catholic Prelate and from 1895 until 1908 he held the title Down and Connor Lord Bishop of Down and Connor . He was known for his energy and zeal, as well as his overt activism in local politics, founding the Belfast Catholic Association . Career Dr Henry was born in Loughguile , County Antrim . After his education at St Patrick s College, Maynooth he was ordained for the Diocese of Down and Connor in 1870. He was appointed to St. Malachy s College St Malachy s Diocesan College to teach French language French and Mathematics . He served as President of the College from 1876 1895 before his Bishop Catholic Church Episcopal nomination. He is the longest ever serving President of the College. He was appointed 25th Bishop of Down and Connor on 6 August 1895.
