File Harry Karstens.jpg thumb Harry KarstensHenryPeter Harry Karstens 1878 spaced ndash November 28, 1955 was the first superintendent of Mount McKinley National Park now known as Denali National Park , from 1921 to 1928. He was the guide and climbing leader of the first complete ascent of Mount McKinley in 1913, with expedition members Hudson Stuck , Walter Harper , and Robert Tatum. Harry Karstens was born in Chicago and went north during the Klondike gold rush in 1897. As a packer, he hauled miner s supplies over the Chilkoot Pass on his back. Unsuccessful as a miner, he started a freight business, hauling freight with dogsled dog teams . As a contract mail carrier he was paid 75 per month. With freighter and mail carrier Charles McGonagall he pioneered portions of the Valdez, Alaska Valdez to Fairbanks, Alaska Fairbanks mail route. In addition to dog teams, he also ran riverboats. In 1907, Karstens accompanied hunter, conservationist, and naturalist Charles Sheldon naturalist Charles Sheldon , on hunting trips into the Toklat River region. PeterHenry Lemke or Lemcke b. at Rehna , Mecklenburg , 27 July 1796 d. at Carrolltown , Pennsylvania , 29 November 1882 was a German Roman Catholic missionary in the United States. Life From a Protestant preacher he became a Catholic on 21 April 1824, and was ordained priest by Bishop Sailer at Ratisbon on 11 April 1826. In 1834 he came as missionary to the United States and after being stationed a short time at Holy Trinity Church, Philadelphia , he was sent as assistant to the aged and infirm Prince Gallitzin at Loretto, Pennsylvania . He took up his residence in the neighbouring town of Ebensburg , from where he attended to a portion of Father Gallitzin s district, about fifty miles in extent. In 1836 he bought some land on which two years later he laid out a town which, in honour of the first Catholic Bishop in the United States, he called Carrolltown, Pennsylvania Carrolltown . He succeeded the deceased Father Gallitzin as pastor of Loretto in 1840. Father Lemke was instrumental in bringing to the United States the first Benedictine s, under the leadership of Father Boniface Wimmer , the future Archabbot of St. Vincent s, in Pennsylvania. Father Lemke himself joined the new Benedictine community in 1852. In 1855 he went as missionary to Kansas , and prepared the way for the foundation of St. Benedict s Abbey at Atchison, Kansas Atchison . He was known for his energy and zeal, as well as his overt activism in local politics, founding the Belfast Catholic Association . Career Dr Henry was born in Loughguile , County Antrim . After his education at St Patrick s College, Maynooth he was ordained for the Diocese of Down and Connor in 1870. He was appointed to St. Malachy s College St Malachy s Diocesan College to teach French language French and Mathematics . He served as President of the College from 1876 1895 before his Bishop Catholic Church Episcopal nomination. He is the longest ever serving President of the College.
