    Distinguish William H. Watson Sir William Henry Watson 1796 1860 , was a British politician and judge. Watson was born at Bamborough , the son of John Watson, captain in the 76th Foot , by Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Grey of Bamborough, Northumberland. He was educated at the Royal Military College, Marlow, and given a commission in the 1st Royal Dragoons by the Duke of York on 7 May 1812, serving with his regiment in the Spanish peninsula. When it was reduced in 1814 he exchanged into the 6th Dragoons on 13 April 1815, with whom he served in Belgium and France . He was present at the Battle of Waterloo and at the entry of the allied armies into Paris. He was placed on the half pay list on 25 March 1816, and the next year entered as a student at Lincoln s Inn , and by hard work soon became competent to practise as a special pleader , and continued to do so until 1832, when he was Called to the bar called to the bar in Lincoln s Inn. He joined the northern circuit, where he found work and became popular. In 1841 he entered the House of Commons of the United Kingdom House of Commons as liberal member for Kinsale UK Parliament constituency Kinsale , for which borough he sat till 1847. In 1843 he became a Queen s counsel Q.C. and a bencher of his inn. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Newcastle upon Tyne UK Parliament constituency Newcastle on Tyne in Whig British political party ...     Orphan date February 2009 William Watson born 1826 was an author and soldier in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War . He is most noted for an autobiographical book Life in The Confederate Army that he wrote after the war chronicling his army life. William Watson was born in 1826 in the Scottish village of Skelmorlie , some twenty five miles west of Glasgow on the Firth of Clyde . His father, a landscape gardener named Henry Watson, had been born in England . He had come to Skelmorlie in 1820 to lay out the grounds of Ashcraig, the estate of Andrew D. Campbell. Watson immigrated about 1845 to the Caribbean Islands, where he worked as a civil engineer and occasional captain of sailing vessels. Sometime about 1850 he moved to Louisiana and by 1860 was part owner of a sawmill and a coal and steamboat business in Baton Rouge . When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the Confederate Army as a Sergeant United States sergeant in the 3rd Louisiana Infantry and served in a number of military campaigns with the regiment . He graduated at Harvard University Harvard in 1851, studied in Germany, was tutor in Greek language Greek at Harvard in 1856 1860, and Eliot professor of Greek there from 1860 until his resignation in 1901.     Professor William J. Watson 1865 1948 was a toponymist , one of the greatest Scotland Scottish scholars of the 20th century, and was the first scholar to place the study of Scottish place names on a firm linguistic basis. Watson was a native Scottish Gaelic language Gaelic speaker, born in Milntown of New Tarbat now known as Milton, Easter Ross Milton , Easter Ross . He was the son of Hugh Watson, a blacksmith . He received his initial education from his uncle, James Watson. William became well grounded in Gaelic studies and in the Classics . William went to the University of Aberdeen and the University of Oxford . First a school teacher in Glasgow , Inverness and then Royal High School, Edinburgh Edinburgh , it was while teaching in Inverness that be began to contribute to the Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness and the Celtic Review . He married Ella Carmichael daughter of Alexander Carmichael . He took the chair of Celtic at the University of Edinburgh in 1914, despite holding no prior university position. He remained in this prestigious position until making way for his son James Carmichael Watson in 1938. William died aged 83 on March 9, 1948 He is best known for his The Celtic Place names of Scotland 1926 , based on 30 years of work.
