Multiple issues cleanup January 2009 expert January 2009 original research January 2009 unreferenced January 2009 The concept of multiple histories is closely related to the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics . In the same way that the many worlds interpretation regards possible futures as having a real existence of their own, the theory of multiple histories reverses this in time to regard the many possible past histories of a given event as having real existence. This concept was introduced by Richard Feynman , whose Feynman path integral is integral integrated over the set of all possible histories. The idea of multiple histories has also been applied to cosmology , in a theoretical interpretation in which the universe has multiple possible cosmologies, and in which reasoning backwards from the current state of the universe to a quantum superposition of possible cosmic histories makes sense. It is measured by the coefficient of multiple determination , denoted as R sup 2 sup , which is a measure of the fit of a linear regression . A regression s R sup 2 sup falls somewhere between zero and one assuming a constant term has been included in the regression a higher value indicates a stronger relationship among the variables, with a value of one indicating that all data points fall exactly on a line in multidimensional space and a value of zero indicating no relationship at all between the independent variables collectively and the dependent variable. Multiple SIDosis is a 1970 short film in which a single performer creates an entire multi part performance of the song Nola . It is an example of a kind of one man band one man band musical performance. Multiple SIDosis was written by, directed by and starred Sid Laverents . It features as many as twelve Split screen filmmaking split screen copies of Laverents playing various conventional and improvised instruments simultaneously. The separately recorded performances of the various parts were overdubbing overdubbed and visually composited to create the final piece. The overdubbing technique has been used before and since in professional recording studios, to allow a single performer to create an entire multi instrument song. Digital technology has made the technique much easier for amateurs to employ today, but no such labour saving devices were available to Laverents. A related practice, companion planting , is sometimes used in gardening and intensive agriculture intensive cultivation of vegetables and fruits. One example of multi cropping is tomatoes onions marigold the marigolds repel some tomato pests. Multiple cropping is found in many agricultural traditions. In the Garhwal Himalaya of India , a practice called baranaja involves sowing 12 or more crops on the same plot, including various types of bean s, grams, and millet s, and harvesting them at different times. In the cultivation of rice , multiple cropping requires effective irrigation , especially in areas with a dry season . Rain that falls during the wet season permits the cultivation of rice during that period, but during the other half of the year, water cannot be channeled into the rice fields without an irrigation system. ref Bunnett, p. 104. ref The Green Revolution in Asia led to the development of high yield varieties of rice, which required a substantially shorter growing season of 100 days, as opposed to traditional varieties, which needed 150 to 180 days. Portal Cryptography Multiple encryption is the process of encryption encrypting an already encrypted message one or more times, either using the same or a different algorithm. The terms cascade encryption , cascade ciphering , multiple encryption , multiple ciphering , and superencipherment are used with the same meaning. Superencryption refers to the outer level encryption of a multiple encryption. Independent keys Picking any two cipher s, if the key cryptography key used is the same for both, the second cipher could possibly undo the first cipher, partly or entirely. This is true of ciphers where the decryption process is exactly the same as the encryption process&mdash the second cipher would completely undo the first. If an attacker were to recover the key through cryptanalysis of the first encryption layer, the attacker could possibly decrypt all the remaining layers, assuming the same key is used for all layers. To prevent that risk, one can use keys that are statistical independence statistically independent for each layer e.g. independent Random number generator RNGs . The importance of the first layer With the exception of the one time pad , no cipher has been theoretically proven to be unbreakable. Furthermore, some recurring properties may be found in the ciphertexts generated by the first cipher. Since those ciphertexts are the plaintexts used by the second cipher, the second cipher may be rendered vulnerable to attacks based on known plaintext properties see references below . original research date December 2010 unreferenced date December 2010 Artist s multiple is a series of identical art objects produced or commissioned by artist according to his idea, usually a signed limited edition made specifically for selling. Multiples have been called the most accessible and reasonably priced contemporary art on the market, value for money and fun. They could be multiples of a 2D print, 3D sculpture or installation piece. The multiple offers artists a way of selling work without compromising their artistic integrity and makes their work accessible to a wider market. Multiples are united by their lack of uniqueness, usually regarded as a prerequisite in a work of art. Many are by artists who work solely with the concept of the multiple. The challenge to the artist is in finding ways of realizing an idea that can be repeated time and again. Thus part of the creative challenge comes in researching new methods and sourcing new materials, leading to some unlikely collaborations between artist and fabricators. History Multiples are not a new idea. Many artists in the 20th century tinkered with the concept. Spurred on by Marcel Duchamp s ready made s, the multiple became a subversive art form. Hand made, limited edition books were around long before that William Morris and Walter Crane were using mass production method s to take art to the masses true to their socialist ideals in the 19th century. It was Josef Beuys 1921 1986 that really took the multiple idea further. Disillusioned by the approach to everyday objects manifested by Fluxus , Beuys wanted to reclaim the role of the object as art. A small multiple sometimes called Trellis Chart, Lattice chart, Grid Chart, or Panel Chart is a series or grid of small similar graphics or charts, allowing them to be easily compared. The term was popularized by Edward Tufte . According to Tufte Envisioning Information , p.  67 At the heart of quantitative reasoning is a single question Compared to what? Small multiple designs, multivariate and data bountiful, answer directly by visually enforcing comparisons of changes, of the differences among objects, of the scope of alternatives. For a wide range of problems in data presentation, small multiples are the best design solution. Example In the example, the departmental salary expense is charted by month with a dashed line indicating the average for each department.
