Image Edmund Dwyer Gray UnitedIrelandCartoon April1888.png thumb Hibernia representing a mourning Ireland. As published by the nationalist newspaper United Ireland following the death of Edmund Dwyer Gray Irish politician Edmund Dwyer Gray in 1888. Hibernia as a national personification representing Ireland appeared in numerous cartoon and drawings, especially in the nineteenth century. As depicted in frequent cartoons in Punch magazine Punch , a magazine outspokenly hostile to Irish nationalism , Hibernia was shown as Britannia s younger sister . She is an attractive, vulnerable girl. She is threatened by manifestations of Irish nationalism such as the Fenians or the Irish National Land League , invariably depicted as brutish, ape like monsters. Unable to defend herself, Hibernia turns to the strong, armoured Britannia for defence. John Tenniel , now mainly remembered as the illustrator of Alice in Wonderland , produced many such depictions of Hibernia. At times nationalist publications such as the Land League and Parnell s United Ireland newspaper did use the image of Hibernia. However, possibly because of the pro union publications adoption of the helpless image of Hibernia, nationalist publications would later use Erin and Kathleen Ni Houlihan as personifications of Irish nationhood. Although Irish Nationalists did continue to use the terms Hibernia and Hibernian in other contexts, such as the Ancient Order of Hibernians . The personification of wisdom , typically as a righteousness woman, is a motif found in religious and philosophical texts, most notably in the Book of Proverbs in the Hebrew Bible and other Jewish and Christian texts. The Greek Septuagint , and both the Qumran and Masada Hebrew versions of Ben Sira conclude with a first person character speaking in Wisdom s voice as in the Book of Proverbs, though it is not certain that this was not appended to Ben Sira from another work. A less clear personification of Wisdom is also found in the Cave 11 Psalm Scroll. ref Daniel J. Harrington Wisdom texts from Qumran 1996 Page 28 It is not crucial for our purposes to decide this debate. What is important is that in Sirach 51 13 30 we have evidence at Qumran for the vivid personification of Wisdom as a female figure ref Other personifications in Jewish and Christian literature The Hebrew Bible includes other personification s, such as sin crouching as an animal at the door of Cain a zoomorphism rather than an anthropomorphism , Ariel as a personification of Jerusalem, and in Ezekiel Tyre, Lebanon Tyre as a cherub in Eden and two sisters, Oholah and Oholibah , who represent Samaria and Jerusalem. ref Hosea 2 metaphor and rhetoric in historical perspective Page 86 Brad E. Refimprove date May 2007 Hibernia was a village located just outside modern day Reynoldsburg, Ohio Reynoldsburg , Ohio . Today, there is a large apartment complex on the land that still bears the name Hibernia. The apartments occupy the southeast corner of East Main Street and Noe Bixby Road, just inside the Interstate 270 Ohio I 270 corridor, on the east side of Columbus, Ohio Columbus . History Around 1840, a couple years after the National Road was established in Ohio, property owner Thomas Armstrong disposed of a few lots along the road, and four or five families built homes there. The grouping eventually got its own post office on August 25, 1849, and began to be referred to by name. Although the post office closed in January 1857, the town lingered in some form. Hibernia was a listed stop on the National Road until around 1900, and as recently as the 1940s, Columbus bus lines on Route 40 East had a stop in Hibernia before arriving in Reynoldsburg. Carlisle garden Located within the modern day apartment complex is a garden known as Carlisle garden. The occupants of Carlisle garden are believed to be the residents of the old village. The oldest stone dates from 1810, and the most recent from 1877. A number of veterans from the War of 1812 and the American Civil War Civil War are still visiting there also. The staff of the apartment complex still maintain the plots. References Richard M. Due to the number of wars Spain was involved in during the early 18th century the country could not provide itself with enough soldiers for its own campaigns. This was also exacerbated by the severe loss of manpower as a result of a Plague disease plague epidemic. Diplomatic approaches were made to a number of countries with requests for the recruitment of mercenaries to fight for Spain. Germans, Italians and Walloons were recruited but the Spanish were particularly keen to engage Irishmen because of their reputation as soldiers. The Confederation of Kilkenny established licences for the recruitment of Irishmen to fight with the King of Spain. One remarkable facet of so many Irishmen fighting for opposing nations in Europe was that they occasionally faced each other as enemies on foreign battlefields. The Hibernia Mine Railroad was a railroad in Morris County, New Jersey Morris County , New Jersey that operated between Hibernia, New Jersey Hibernia and Rockaway, New Jersey Rockaway from 1863 to 1946. History Image CNJ Iron Mine RRs.png thumb right Hibernia Mine Railroad and the neighboring lines of the CNJ High Bridge Branch The railroad was incorporated in 1863 by various owners of the Hibernia mines Hibernia iron mines . It was authorized to transport ore from the mines to the Morris Canal , with the possibility of extension south to the Morris and Essex Railroad . That extension was built in 1868, and the charter was modified to allow the use of steam power along the length of the line, which previously had been limited to animal power between the mines and the canal. In 1881 the completion of the Dover and Rockaway Railroad established a connection between the Hibernia Mine RR and the Central Railroad of New Jersey CNJ at Port Oram modern day Wharton, New Jersey Wharton . The line operated profitably on its ore business, making it an attractive acquisition for the CNJ, which leased it in 1890 and incorporated it into the High Bridge Branch line. Production at the Hibernia Mines rapidly declined during the 1890s and by 1907 only one shaft was producing. The Hibernia mines were finally closed in 1916, and although the Beach Glen mines reopened briefly in the 1920s, all the mines were closed in 1930. Although the ore traffic ceased, several industrial customers in Rockaway remained, and in 1930 the CNJ eliminated the expenses of its lease by purchasing the line outright, eventually abandoning the northern portion of the line in 1946. The segment that serviced Rockaway s industrial customers remains in operation and is operated today by the Morristown and Erie Railway Morristown and Erie railroad.
