The Economy of Scotland in the HighMiddleAges for the purposes of this article pertains to the economic situation in Scotland between the death of Donald II of Scotland Domnall II in 900, and the death of Alexander III of Scotland Alexander III in 1286 which then led indirectly to the Scottish Wars of Independence . The period corresponds roughly with general Europe an historical era known as the HighMiddleAges , and also with the Medieval Warm Period . Trade The Scottish economy of this period was dominated by agriculture and by short distance, local trade. There was an increasing amount of foreign trade in the period, as well as exchange gained by means of military plunder. Generally, continental trading centres were confined to the eastern seaboard, and exchange with Scandinavia and Ireland on the western seaboard. The first Scottish coins were minted in the reign of David I of Scotland David I , perhaps in the silver gained by David s acquisition of the Pennines Pennine silver mines. By the end of this period, coins were replacing barter goods , but for most of this period most exchange was done without the use of metal currency. ref StringerCoinCitation Agriculture Most of Scotland s agricultural wealth in this period came from pastoralism , rather than arable farming, with arable ... 1300 , in Jenny Wormald ed. , Scotland A History , Oxford, 2005 , pp. 38 76 See also Scotland in the HighMiddleAges Christianity in Medieval Scotland Culture of Scotland in the HighMiddleAges Kingdom of Alba Legal institutions of Scotland in the HighMiddleAges Society of Scotland in the HighMiddleAges Warfare of Scotland in the HighMiddleAges Economic history Category Medieval Scotland ... Scottish legal institutions in the HighMiddleAges are, for the purposes of this article, the informal and formal systems which governed and helped to manage Scottish society between the years 900 and 1288, a period roughly corresponding with the general Europe an era usually called the HighMiddleAges . Scottish society in this period was predominantly Gaels Gaelic . Early Gaelic law tracts, first written down in the ninth century reveal a society highly concerned with kinship, status, honour and the regulation of blood feuds. The early Scottish lawman, or Breitheamh , became the Latin Judex the great Breitheamh became the magnus Judex , which arguably developed into the office of Justiciar , an office which survives to this day in that of Lord Justice General . Scottish common law began to take shape at the end of the period, assimilating Gaelic and Celtic law with practices from Anglo Norman England and the Continent. ref ScotLawCitation Native Law Pre fourteenth century law amongst the native Scots is not always well attested. Scottish Society in the HighMiddleAges pertains to Scotland Scottish Scottish society society roughly between 900 and 1286, a period roughly corresponding to the general historical era known as the Scotland in the HighMiddleAgesHighMiddleAges . Stratification High Medieval Scottish society was stratified. We know more about Social status status in early Gaelic society than perhaps any other early medieval European society, owing primarily to the large body of legal texts and tracts on status which are extant. These texts give additional understanding high medieval Scottish society, so long as inferences are kept conservative. The legal tract that has come down to us as the Leges inter Brettos et Scottos Laws of Brets and Scots , lists five grades of man King, mormaer earl , to sech thane, cthigern and serf. ref SocGradesNoCitation For pre twelfth century Scotland, we should add slave to this category. The standard differentiation in medieval European society between the bellatores those who fight , i.e. aristocrats , the oratores those who pray , i.e. clergy and the laboratores those who work , i.e. peasants was useless for understanding Scottish society in the earlier period, but becomes more useful in the post Davidian period. width 70 cellpadding 0 cellspacing 1 border 3 border 1 cellpadding 4 cellspacing 0 style margin 2.5em 2em 0.5em 0 background c1d2c2 border 7px aaa solid border collapse collapse tr th width 15 Early Gaelic Society th tr tr td Ranking from early Gaelic Law codes Nemed sacred person, highest rank Ard r High King R ruirech King of overkings Ruiri .... The Scottish army of the HighMiddleAges for the purposes of this article pertains to the fighting men and military systems that existed in Scotland between the death of Donald II of Scotland Domnall II in 900, and the death of Alexander III of Scotland Alexander III in 1286, which fell before and indirectly led to the military conflict known as the Scottish Wars of Independence . Warriors and warfare After the Norman Conquest of David I, the warriors of Scotland can be classed as of two types. Firstly, the native exercitus Scoticanus i.e. Scottish army , also common army and, secondly, the exercitus militaris i.e. feudal army . Gaelic army The Common Army army formed the larger part of all pre Stewart Scottish armies, but in the wider world of European i.e. French chivalry the feudal section was the more prestigious. The native Scots, like all early medieval Europeans, practiced organized Slavery slave raiding, though this would seem to have disappeared by the middle of the 12th century. Presumably, they did so with each other. However, our main record of it comes from when they practised it against their Norman and pre Conquest Anglo Saxon neighbour. John Gillingham argues that this was one of the things which made the Scots and other Celts particularly barbarous in the eyes of their Frankish neighbours, because the French had largely abandoned this form of warfare. ref GillinghamCitation Symeon of Durham writes, div class notice spoilerbox table border 0 tr td div class toccolours spoilercontents the youths and girls, and all who seemed fit for work and toil, were bound and driven in front of the enemy, to be maid slaves and handmaids in perpetual exile. Its subtitle is a study of the forms of life, thought and art in France and the Netherlands in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries . In it, he presents the idea that the exaggerated formality and romanticism of late medieval noble court court society was a defense mechanism against the constantly increasing violence and brutality of general society. He saw the period as one of pessimism, cultural exhaustion, and nostalgia, rather than of rebirth and optimism. Huizinga s work has later come under criticism, especially for relying too heavily on evidence from the rather exceptional case of the Duchy of Burgundy Burgundian court. unreferenced date June 2009 bot yes Portal Middle earth In J. R. R. Tolkien s fictional universe of Middle earth , the time is typically rendered in Ages. Ages are one calendar era epoch of the Valar. Before the arising of the Sun Middle earth Sun they were approximately one thousand Valian Years in length the exact length of a Valian Year varied in different drafts of Tolkien s texts from close to 10 Sun years in most versions to precisely 144 Sun years in his final estimation . After the Sun, Ages sped up and length is more variable. The Years of the Sun began with the 30th Valian Age, and the Fourth Age of Middle earth began with the 37th Valian Age. However, only four, not seven Ages are counted. The Second and later Ages, during the Years of the Sun, correspond more to the earlier Valian Era s than to their Ages.
