Historicity in philosophy is the underlying concept of history , or the intersection of teleology the concept and study of progress and purpose , temporality the concept of time , and historiography semiotics and history of history . Varying conceptualizations of historicity emphasize linear progress or the repetition or modulation of past events. Concepts of historicity In Phenomenology philosophy phenomenology , historicity is the history of constitution of any intentionality intentional object, both in the sense of history as tradition and in the sense where every individual has its own history. Of course, these two senses are often very similar One individual s history is heavily influenced by the tradition the individual is formed in, but personal history can also produce an object that wouldn t be a part of any tradition. In addition, personal historicity doesn t develop in the same way as tradition. Martin Heidegger argued in Being and Time that it is temporality that gives rise to history. All things have their place and time, and nothing past is outside of history. Francis Fukuyama in The End of History and the Last Man famously argued that the collapse of Soviet communism brought humanity to the end of history whereby the world s global dialectical machinations had been resolved with the triumph of liberal capitalism. Before Fukuyama, Jean Baudrillard argued for a different concept of the end of history . Baudrillard s most in depth writings on the notion of historicity are found in the books Fatal Strategies and The Illusion of the End . It is for these writings that he received a full chapter denunciation from the physicist Alan Sokal along with Jean Bricmont , due to his alleged misuse of physical concepts of linear time, space and stability. DISPLAYTITLE Historicity of the Iliad Trojan War The extent of the historical basis of the Iliad has been a topic of scholarly debate in classical studies since the 19th century. While the Age of Enlightenment had rejected the story of the Trojan War as fable, the discoveries made by Heinrich Schliemann at Hisarlik reopened the question in modern terms, and the subsequent excavation of Troy VIIa and the discovery of the toponym Wilusa in Hittite texts Hittite correspondence has made it plausible that the Trojan War cycle was at least remotely based on a historical conflict of the Bronze Age collapse 12th century BC , even if the poems of Homer are removed from the event by more than four centuries of oral tradition. The Historicity of the Patriarchal Narratives The Quest for the Historical Abraham is a book by biblical scholar Thomas L. Thompson , Professor of Old Testament Studies at the University of Copenhagen . Together with John Van Seters s Abraham in History and Tradition book Abraham in History and Tradition 1975 , this book marked the culmination of a growing current of dissatisfaction in scholarly circles with the then current consensus or near consensus on the Patriarchal narratives. The consensus can be summarised as the view that, even if archaeology could not directly confirm the existence of the patriarchs Abraham , Isaac and Jacob , it nonetheless confirmed that these stories originated in a second millennium BC setting based on the fact that many personal names, place names, and customs referenced in the Genesis narratives were unique to that era. This view was expressed by John Bright in his influential History of Israel 1959, 2nd edition 1960 in these words O ne is forced to the conclusion that the patriarchal narratives authentically reflect social customs at home in the second millennium rather than those of later Israel . ref http www.biblicalstudies.org.uk .... Radical Criticism is a movement around the late 19th century that, typically, denied authentic authorship of the Pauline epistles . This went beyond the higher criticism of the T bingen school which with the exception of Bruno Bauer held that a core of at least four epistles had been written by Paul of Tarsus in the 1st century. The Dutch school The Dutch school of radical criticism started in 1878 with a publication by Allard Pierson , who denied Pauline authorship of Epistle to the Galatians Galatians . Similarly, Willem Christiaan van Manen W.C. van Manen , who had written a doctoral thesis defending the authenticity of First Epistle to the Thessalonians 1 Thessalonians , wrote in 1889 that he had come to the same conclusions as Loman.
