Image Europe a history davies cover.jpg right thumb Book cover Europe A History is a narrative history book by Norman Davies . As Davies notes in the Preface, the book contains little that is original. Primary research was rarely required. Twelve chapters span the European past from prehistory till the disintegration of the Soviet Union . The chapters contain almost three hundred so called capsules , texts describing separate terms that often exceeds the specific time frame e.g. Coward, Hatred, Loot or Vorkuta . In the middle part, Davies tries to avoid what he calls the bias of Western Civilization neglect of eastern Europe , in the 20th century part he fights the Allied scheme of history . Davies notes at the end of the preface the book is only one from an almost infinite number of histories of Europe that could be written and that his work is the view of one pair of eyes . It argues that this expansion affected both the societies that Europeans encountered in their expansion and European societies themselves. It asserts that non European peoples were active participants in the progress of history, rather than static, unchanging cultures. Wagner from Union Road, Clayton, Ohio , printed in February, 1961, and June, 1969. Historical context Throughout 1800s, the Schwarzenau Brethren Brethren were skeptical of histories and record keeping, as they were not to emulate their ancestors, but rather Jesus Christ , the Apostles , and the Early Church. However, by the end of the century enough changes were occurring that the Brethren, having great respect for the Brethren that came before them, were interested in Brethren history. At the German Baptist Brethren Annual Conference year? , a motion was passed approving the writing of a history of the Brethren, however, the motion did not specify an author. In classical antiquity , Europe was assumed to cover the quarter of the globe north of the Mediterranean , an arrangement that was adhered to in medieval T and O map s. Ptolemy s world map of the 2nd century already has a reasonably precise description of southern and western Europe, but is unaware of particulars of northern and eastern Europe. Medieval maps such as the Hereford Mappa Mundi still assume that Scandinavia is an island. Progress is made in the 16th century, and Gerard Mercator gives an accurate representation of all of Europe, including Scandinavia shown as a peninsula. The colonization in Europe during the Classical antiquity Classical period up until the Middle ages was a process of Human settlement settlement of terra nullius uninhabited lands by people of the neighboring regions. Earlier colonization activities were made by the Moors on the Iberian peninsula , Phoenecians on the Mediterranean shores , and previous tribes going back to the Stone Age . Later activities with similar aims include the State organisation of the Ottoman Empire Vassal states Ottoman Empire conquest of European territories and their gradual transformation into regular provinces and the Lebensraum policy of Nazi Germany .
