    The Hocking Canal was a small 19th Century canal in southern Ohio that once linked Athens, Ohio Athens to Lancaster, Ohio Lancaster and the Ohio and Erie Canal , but was destroyed by flooding and never rebuilt. It paralleled the Hocking River . In 1829, southern Ohio private investors interesting to getting salt and other products to the marketplace faster decided to construct a branch canal from the Ohio and Erie Canal at Carroll, Ohio southward towards Lancaster. Excavation on the Lancaster lateral began in 1831. This portion of the Canal was completed September 4, 1838. In the same year the Lancaster Lateral was purchased by the state. Ohio subsequently contracted to extend the canal from Lancaster to Logan, Ohio Logan , Nelsonville, Ohio Nelsonville , Chauncey, Ohio Chauncey and Athens, fifty three miles from Carroll. The 56 mile canal was completed in 1843, although much of it was officially opened two years earlier. Salt, coal, pork products, wool and lumber were shipped out, and furniture and iron products were brought into Athens and Hocking counties via the canal. He was born at St Stephen in Brannel , Cornwall , to James Hocking, part owner of a tin mine, and his wife Elizabeth. In 1870 he was ordained as a minister. Working in different parts of England over the next few years, he wrote his first novel, Alec Green , while living in Liverpool in 1878. It was, however, with his second novel that he won great fame Her Benny , a story of the street children of Liverpool. This sold over a million copies. All in all he wrote fifty books. Kitto was also politically active, for the Liberal Party UK Liberal party . He died in Highgate , Middlesex , and was survived by his wife, Esther Mary, to whom he had been married since 1876. Together they had one son and two daughters. Through his mother he was related both to the biblical scholar John Kitto , and to H. D. F. He was Member of Parliament MP for Coventry South UK Parliament constituency Coventry South from 1959 to 1964. During his tenure in the British House of Commons House of Commons he was Parliamentary Private Secretary PPS to the Foreign Office . Hocking s victory in Coventry was certainly an achievement as the constituency was seen as a fairly strong Labour Party UK Labour Party area and indeed he remains to this day the only Conservative to have won the seat. He became a close friend of Denys Bullard , another Conservative MP with agricultural interests whose seat depended on a small and hard won majority in a difficult constituency.     Joseph Hocking 7 November 1860  4 March 1937 was a Cornish people Cornish novelist and Methodism Methodist minister. He was born at St Stephen in Brannel , Cornwall , to James Hocking, part owner of a tin mine, and his wife Elizabeth. In 1884, he was ordained as a minister. Working in different parts of England over the next few years, he wrote his first novel, Harry Penhale The Trial of his Faith , while in London in 1887. He regarded fiction as a highly effective medium for conveying his Christian message to the public, and combined his writing with his church duties, until ill health forced him to resign from the ministry in 1909. His last parish was the large and important United Free Church at Woodford, London Woodford Essex, which he was instrumental in having rebuilt by the advanced arts and crafts architect, Charles Harrison Townsend . On his recovery, he found himself a much sought after preacher across Britain, and he travelled extensively in the Middle East . He continued to write, and over the course of his career, he was the author of nearly 100 books. Although largely forgotten now, he was tremendously popular in his day.
