  1. Rio Receiver

The Rio Receiver was a home stereo device for playing MP3 files stored on your computer s hard drive over an Ethernet or HomePNA network. It was later rebranded and sold as the Dell Digital Audio Receiver. With a design derived from the existing linux based Empeg Car , it became popular among the Linux hacking community. The hardware consisted of a Cirrus Logic 7212 CPU ARM architecture ARM720T at 74 MHz , 1Mx32 4 megabyte MB of EDO RAM , and either 512k 16 or 256k 16 1 MB or 0.5 MB of NOR flash used to boot. Audio output used a Burr Brown PCM1716 Digital to analog converter DAC that drove line outputs, the headphone jack, and a Tripath Switching amplifier class D digital audio amplifier for speakers. Network connections were via either a Cirrus logic 8900A 10MBit Ethernet or a Broadcom HomePNA 10 megabit Mbit s chipset if no Ethernet link was seen at boot time, the unit tried HomePNA. The user interface was a 128x64 pixel monochrome LCD with an Electroluminescence EL backlight , a rotary control with a push button, several buttons and IR remote control . The unit booted via a 2.2 linux kernel in flash which used DHCP and Simple Service Discovery Protocol SSDP to discover an NFS server from which it loaded a new kernel. The second kernel then mounted a root filesystem over NFS containing a small set of standard POSIX tools and an application for selecting and playing music over the network, which was served using HTTP by the Audio Receiver Manager software running on a Windows PC. Although the music player and the Audio Receiver Manager and Broadcom HomePNA kernel driver module were proprietary software, the kernel and other tools were open source. The two step kernel boot process allowed rapid development of changes to the kernel allowing units to run new kernels by simply power cycling them the use of standard protocols meant a variety of replacement software components could be developed independently. 1. Intelligent Network Interface Device

Unreferenced date March 2009 An Intelligent Network Interface Device , more commonly known as an iNID , provides Digital Subscriber Line DSL access and advanced TV to customers subscribed to AT&T AT&T s U verse brand of services. Unlike the traditional Network Interface Device or NID this replaces, an iNID includes an outdoor residential gateway and mounts to the side of the subscriber s home in a hardened, weather resistant enclosure that is easily accessible by carrier technicians. By transferring intelligent gateway functions and all service and network terminations to the side of the house, the iNID eliminates the need to bring DSL into the house, eliminating the signal loss typical of in home wiring. The location at the side of the house also allows for an easy connection between the iNID s integrated VoIP function and the home s existing phone wiring. The outdoor location also provides carrier technicians with easy access to home coaxial cable wiring, which can be reused to distribute high speed LAN technologies to video set top boxes and other networked consumer devices throughout the home using HomePNA . 1. HomeRF

HomeRF was a wireless networking specification for home devices. It was developed in 1998 by the HomeRF Working Group, a consortium of mobile wireless companies that included Proxim Wireless , Siemens AG Siemens , Motorola , Philips ref cite web title HomeRF Archives author Wayne Caswell date November 17, 2010 url http www.cazitech.com HomeRF Archives.htm accessdate July 16, 2011 ref and more than 100 other companies. The group was disbanded in January 2003 after other wireless networks became accessible to home users and Microsoft began including support for them in its Microsoft Windows Windows operating system s. As a result HomeRF has fallen into obsolescence. The archive of the HomeRF Working Group is maintained by Palo Wireless. Description HomeRF used frequency hopping spread spectrum FHSS in the 2.4 GHz frequency band and in theory could achieve a maximum of 10 Mbit s throughput its nodes can travel within a 50 meter range of an wireless access point while remaining connected to the personal area network PAN . HomeRF allowed both voice telephone signals and data signals to be exchanged over the same wireless network. Therefore, in HomeRF, cordless telephones and laptops, for example, could share the same Bandwidth computing bandwidth in the same home or office. Available HomeRF local area network s LANs supported 1.6 Mbit s, relatively slow compared to technology marketed under the Wi Fi brand name. For example, second generation 802.11b LANs supported 11 Mbit s. 802.11n reaches a maximum of 600 Mbit s. Several standards and working groups focused on wireless networking technology in radio frequency Radio frequency RF . Standards include the popular IEEE 802.11 family, 802.16 , and Bluetooth . 1. Ethernet over coax

Ethernet over Coax EoC is a family of technologies that supports the transmission of Ethernet frames over coaxial cable . History The first Ethernet standard, known as 10BASE5 in the family of IEEE 802.3 , specified baseband operation over coaxial cable, which remained the principal medium until the 1990s when thinner, cheaper twisted pair s came to dominate the market. The use of coaxial cable for Ethernet is still supported by the standard, but rarely used because coaxial cable is more costly to purchase, install, and operate for Local Area Network s. Research in Ethernet transmission over coaxial cable continued, as both consumers and telecommunications operators strive to use existing coaxial cable from Cable Television or CATV installations, to carry broadband data into and through the home, and into Multiple Dwelling Unit MDU installations. Most EoC technologies are being developed for in home or in premise networking and are expected to be operated within the domain of a single operator. Standards Home networking Recommendations The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers IEEE maintains all official Ethernet standards in the 802.x family or protocols. 1. Computer Networks and Internet Technology

refimprove date September 2009 Computer networks and Internet technology This article gives a brief outline of foundation for networks, direct link networks, packet switching , internetworking , end to end protocols, resource allocation issues, and applications. Computer networks When two or more computers are interconnected to each other via some kind of medium to share resources then the state is called computer network . Computer network is the interconnection of computers for communication purposes. Connection method Computer networks can also be classified according to the hardware and software technology that is used to interconnect the individual devices in the network, such as Optical fiber , Ethernet , Wireless LAN , HomePNA , Power line communication or G.hn . Ethernet uses physical wiring to connect devices. Frequently deployed devices include Ethernet hub hubs , network switch es, network bridge s and or Router computing router s. Wireless LAN technology is designed to connect devices without wiring. These devices use radio wave s or Infrared infrared signals as a transmission medium. Ethernet over coax ITU T G.hn ITU T G.hn Ethernet over coax technology uses existing home wiring coaxial cable, phone lines and power lines to create a high speed up to 1 Gigabit s local area network. Wired technologies Twisted pair This is the most widely used medium for telecommunication. Twisted pair wires are ordinary telephone wires which consist of two insulated copper wires twisted into pairs and are used for both voice and data transmission. The use of two wires twisted together helps to reduce crosstalk and electromagnetic induction. The transmission speed range from 2 million bits per second to 100 million bits per second. Coaxial cable These cables are widely used for cable television systems, office buildings, and other worksites for local area networks.
