Louis S bastien Le Nain de Tillemont 30 November 1637 &ndash 10 January 1698 was a French ecclesiastical historian . He was born in Paris into a wealthy Jansenism Jansenist family, and was educated at the Petites coles of Port Royal des Champs Port Royal , where his historical interests were formed and encouraged. At the age of twenty, he began his two monumental works, the M moires pour servir l histoire eccl siastique des six premiers si cles and the Histoire des empereurs et autres princes qui ont r gn pendant les six premiers si cles de l glise . The first is a history of the first six centuries of the Christian Church the second is a history of the Roman emperors during the same period. Tillemont became a priest at the age of thirty nine and settled at Port Royal. When Port Royal was dissolved in 1679, he moved to his family estate at Tillemont, where he spent the rest of his life, pursuing his historical work with single minded devotion. His Histoire began to issue from the press in 1690 and his M moires in 1693, though the publication of both works was not completed until after his death. Tillemont is cited frequently by Edward Gibbon Gibbon in his The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire . His works were among the first to provide critical surveys of the full range of source material. His prose style is considered dry, but he had a reputation for accuracy, detail and conscientiousness. His work was attacked on a large scale by Honoratus a Sancta Maria in his R flexions sur les r gles et l usage de la critique , three volumes 1712 1720 . ref CathEncy wstitle Honoratus a Sancta Maria ref References CathEncy wstitle Louis S bastien Le Nain de Tillemont Reflist Persondata Metadata see Wikipedia Persondata . 1. Servius (praenomen)

This page is about the Latin praenomen. For the sixth king of Rome, see Servius Tullius . For the jurist, see Servius Sulpicius Rufus . For the grammarian, see Maurus Servius Honoratus Servius Maurus Honoratus . Servius is a Latin praenomen , or given name personal name , which was used throughout the period of the Roman Republic , and well into imperial times. It was used by both patrician and plebeian families, and gave rise to the patronymic Servilia gens gens Servilia . The feminine form is Servia . The name was regularly abbreviated Ser. ref Dictionary of Greek & Roman Biography & Mythology ref ref Mika Kajava, Roman Female Praenomina Studies in the Nomenclature of Roman Women 1994 ref Servius was never one of the most common praenomina about ten other names were used more frequently. Most families did not use it, although it was a favorite of the Cornelii and the Sulpicii, two of the greatest patrician houses at Rome. The name gradually became less common towards the end of the Republic, but was still used in imperial times. ref Dictionary of Greek & Roman Biography & Mythology ref ref Realencyclop die der Classischen Altertumswissenschaft ref Origin and meaning of the name The original meaning of Servius was forgotten by the late Republic. Chase derives the name from the verb servo , to keep or preserve . This seems consistent with other Latin praenomina, such as Sertor praenomen Sertor , which appears to have a similar meaning. ref George Davis Chase, The Origin of Roman Praenomina , in Harvard Studies in Classical Philology , vol. VIII 1897 ref Marcus Terentius Varro Varro had nothing to say about the name, although the epitome, De Praenominibus Concerning Praenomina by Julius Paris, suggests that it was given to a child whose mother died in childbirth. Dionysius of Halicarnassus, apparently followed by Festus, indicated that it was given to a child whose mother was held in bondage. This etymology was based on the similarity between Servius and servus , a s ...   more details

Aen. 1.323 Now the youth i.e. Triptolemus was carried high over Europe and Asia. He turned his face towards Scythia where, Lyncus was king. He stood before the king s household gods. He was asked how he had come there, and the reason for his journey, his name and his country. He said Athens, the famous city, is my home, Triptolemus, my name. I came not by ship, on the sea, or by foot, over land. The clear air parted for me. I bring you the gifts of Ceres. If you scatter them through the wide fields, they will give you back fruitful harvests, and ripening crops. The barbarian was jealous. So that he might be the author, of so great a gift, he received him like a guest, but attacked Triptolemus, with a sword, while he was in deep sleep. As he attempted to pierce the youth s breast, Ceres turned the king into a lynx, then ordered the youth, of Athens, the city of Mopsopus, to drive the sacred team back through the air. trans. A. S. The island is approximately 3  km in length East to West and 900m across. The island is most famous for its fortress prison the Fort Royal , in which the so called Man in the Iron Mask was held in the 17th century. History The island is first known to have been inhabited during Ancient Rome Roman times, when it was known by the name Lero . The island was probably renamed in medieval times by Crusades crusaders , who built a chapel to Saint Margaret of Antioch on the island. In the 14th century, probably due to the writings of Raymond F raud , the island became associated with a fictional Sainte Marguerite, sister to Honoratus Saint Honoratus , founder of the monastery on the neighbouring le Saint Honorat . According to legend, Sainte Marguerite led a community of nuns on the island which was named after her. In 1612, ownership of the island passed from the monks of Saint Honorat to Claude de Lorraine, Duke of Chevreuse . Shortly after, construction of a fort on the island to become the Fort Royal began. In 1635, the island was captured by the Spanish and recaptured by the French two years later. Towards the end of the 17th century, the Fort Royal became home to a barracks and state prison. During the 18th century, the present day village of Sainte Marguerite developed, thriving on the spending power of the soldiers stationed on the island.
