Cleanup and trail building took place from 1962 1963, and planting started in 1964 following an overall design by Doan Ogden , a nationally known landscape artist. At that time more than 5,000 plants were transplanted into the garden from private lands and national forests. The gardens are named for Alfred Boerner , who designed the original five formal gardens. The Annual, Perennial, Rock, Rose and Peony Gardens were constructed in the 1930s. Later additions included trial, herb, lily and shrub rose gardens, as well as the Bog Walk. The gardens are part of the Milwaukee County Park System and maintained by professional Horticulture horticulturalists . Many species of plant life are cultivated and displayed. The gardens include test and display gardens for All America Selections, and is an American Hosta Society Display Garden. Boerner Botanical Gardens is open from late April to early November, and closes for the winter. Within the gardens and adjacent to them in Whitnall Park, and along the Root River Parkway is the arboretum, which showcases arranged groves of trees and shrubs. Nearby are the Wehr Nature Center and the historic Trimborn Farm estate, which are also maintained by the county park system.     The Waddell Barnes Botanical Gardens 167 acres are botanical garden s located across the campus of Macon State College , Macon, Georgia . They are open daily without charge. The gardens were established in 1967 to designs of landscape architect Clay Adamson when college construction began. Initial planting consisted of more than 1,600 trees, 2,500 shrubs, and 12,000 ground cover plants. Thirty years later, Dr. Waddell Barnes, chair of trustees, led the effort to create botanical gardens across campus to a master plan by Robert and Company. In 2003 the gardens were named in Dr. Barnes honor. Today the campus is divided into 16 gardens Asian, European, Fall Colors, Fragrant, Fruit Trees, Industry, Medicinal, Natives, Showy Flowers, Showy Fruit, Shrubs and Vines, Southern Traditional, Touch & Feel, Urban Environment, Wet Environment, and Xeriscape.
