The Ekdromos plural Ekdromoi was an ancient Greek light hoplite . The name means out runners , and denotes their ability to exit the phalanx formation phalanx and fight in an irregular order, as the situation might demand. The Ekdromoi were mostly lightly armoured with aspis and bronze helmet , fast infantry and were armed with spear and short sword. The term will actually describe any hoplite who practices the tactic of Ekdromi , that is the irregular exit from the battleline. When within the phalanx, they functioned as ordinary hoplites but upon order, they would exit their ranks and attack the enemy in loose irregular order. Tactical necessities that would ordain such a use would include constant harassment from enemy skirmishers, clearing the path from enemy presence for the army to pass in safety, the fast capture of key points within or around the battlefield, the pursue of a broken enemy etc. Their lightness did not guarantee contact with a skirmishing enemy, but they effectively would push the enemy and clear the way. Psiloi and peltasts would never allow themselves to fight in melee with the Ekdromoi, since the latter were, even without the armor, much better equipped for close combat, but poorly armed barbarian infantry often made that mistake. Xenophon made use of Ekdromoi during the march of the Ten Thousand Greek Ten Thousand against the numerous barbarian warriors disrupting the Greek columns, as is multiple times attested in his work, Anabasis Xenophon The Anabasis . Zeugitae were members of the third census division created by Solon s constitutional reforms in ancient Athens. The Zeugitae were those whose property or estate could produce 200 bushels of wet or dry goods or their equivalent , per year. The term appears to have come from the Greek word for yoke , which has led modern scholars to conclude that zeugitae were either men who could afford a yoke of oxen or men who were yoked together in the phalanx that is, men who could afford their own hoplite armor. ref Whitehead, The Ancient Athenian , 282 3 ref The Zeugitae could serve as Hoplites in the Athenian Army. Phalangite is the Greek name for an infantry man deployed in a Phalanx formation phalanx massive rectangular or square closed formation of Classical and Hellenistic antiquity. The Macedon ian so called Sarissaphoros sarissa bearer had a tactical advantage over other phalangites because of their extremely long pikes known as a sarissa . The exomis from exo outside , and omos shoulder was a Ancient Greece Greek tunic used by workers and light infantry. The tunic largely replaced the older chitoniskos as the main tunic of the hoplites during the later 5th century BC. It was made of two rectangles of linen other materials were also used , which were stitched together from the sides to form a cylinder, leaving enough space at the top for the arms. An opening at the top was also left for the head. The cylinder was gathered up at the waist with a cloth belt using a reef knot , which made the cloth fall down over the belt, hiding it from view. To allow freedom of movement to the right arm, the seam at the right shoulder was taken apart, and the right hand was passed through the head opening. The color of the tunic varied, but red especially crimson was increasingly the standard color preferred by hoplites during and after the Peloponnesian War .
