The WestIndies Associated States was the collective name for a number of islands in the Eastern Caribbean whose status changed from being Crown colony British colonies to states in associated state free association with the United Kingdom in 1967. These states included Antigua and Barbuda Antigua , Dominica , Grenada , Saint Christopher Nevis Anguilla , Saint Lucia , and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Saint Vincent . Associated Statehood between these six territories and the UK was brought about by the Associated Statehood Act 1967 . Under the Act each state had full control over its constitution and thus internal self government , while the UK retained responsibility for foreign policy external affairs and National security defence . The British monarch remained head of state , but the Governor now had only consititutional powers, and was often a local citizen. Many moved to change their flags from modified versions of the Blue Ensign , to unique designs with three, St. Vincent, St.Kitts Nevis Anguilla and Grenada adopting blue, green and yellow flags. ref http www.worldstatesmen.org Grenada.html World Statesmen Grenada ref ref http www.worldstatesmen.org Saint Kitts and Nevis.html World Statesmen Saint Kitts and Nevis ref ref http www.worldstatesmen.org Saint Vincent.html World Statesmen Saint Vincent ref ref http www.crwflags.com fotw flags gb carib.html ass Flags of the World WestIndies Associated States ref During the period of free association, all of the states participated in the WestIndies Associated States Council of Ministers , the East Caribbean Common Market and Caribbean Free Trade Association or CARIFTA now superseded by CARICOM . Use dmy dates date November 2010 The term British WestIndies refers to the former colonies and present possessions of the United Kingdom in the Caribbean . In the history of the British WestIndies there have been several attempts at political unions. These attempts occurred over a period of more than 300 years, from 1627 to 1958, and were carried out, or sometimes imposed, first by the English and then the British government. During this time, some of the attempted unions were true federations of colonies and others involved attaching various colonies to a major, nearby colony for the purposes of cheaper, efficient government or because the attached colonies were too small to justify a separate government. The initial federal attempts never went so far as to try to encompass all of the British WestIndies BWI , but were more regional in scope. The historical regional groupings were the British Leeward Islands , British Windward Islands and Jamaica with other nearby English British colonies such as the Cayman Islands, British Honduras and the Turks and Caicos Islands. note the original wording referred to historical regional groupings of nearby colonies which would encompass the Cayman ... would re appear during the life of the Federation of the WestIndies . Unreferenced date December 2009 The Emancipation of the British WestIndies was proposed as early as 1787, but was not achieved until the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 effective 1834 . The United Kingdom British were the first to attempt to abolish slavery in the Caribbean during the early 19th century, but complete abolitionism emancipation took a lot of time and effort to achieve. Many people, primarily in England , began to view slavery as cruel and unjust as The Enlightenment swept across the nation. The global economic changes taking place during this time period created a decline in the need for slavery in the Caribbean as the industrial revolution and free trade began to take shape and products could be created more cheaply elsewhere. Religious efforts aided in this oppositional movement by taking a strong stance against slavery during the Methodist movement and New Protestant Evangelism . The Roman Catholic Church also played a crucial role in slave uprisings, mainly because it was the primary religion in the area that would recognize slaves as members of the church. Uprisings such as the Haitian Revolution and the Baptist War reinforced the British attempt to abolish slavery by forcing Europeans to focus their attention on Caribbean affairs. A significant event in the campaign was the preaching by Beilby Porteus , Bishop of London , of the 1783 Anniversary Sermon of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts SPG , an occasion which he used in order to criticise the Anglican Church s role in ignoring the plight of the slaves on its Codrington Estates in Barbados , and to recommend means by which the lot of slaves there could be improved. It was a well reasoned and much reprinted sermon, preached before forty members of the society, including eleven ... File Coat of arms of the Federation of the West Indies.svg thumb right 250px The coat of arms of the WestIndies Federation was used between 1958 and 1962. The background of the shield bore four equally spaced narrow white stripes with a ten orange gold discs representing each island grouping, undulating horizontally across a blue field representing the Caribbean Sea and the sun shining upon the waves. These devices were based upon the flag of the WestIndies Federation flag originally designed by Edna Manley . A triangle is superimposed on the shield, and the shield is topped by a British lion . The scroll beneath proclaims To Dwell Together In Unity . The shield is supported on either side by the country s national bird, the pelican , with wings extended. Above this is a helmet topped with a flaming torch held by an upright arm. The torch signifies a beacon to light a path. The design is reflected in the present coat of arms of Barbados coats of arms of Barbados , Coat of arms of Saint Lucia Saint Lucia , and coat of arms of Saint Kitts and Nevis Saint Kitts and Nevis .
