  1. Cadre Noir

Image Didier Courreges dsc03627.jpg thumb right Olympic champion Didier Courr ges The Cadre Noir is an equestrianism equestrian display team based in the city of Saumur in western France . The troop was founded in 1828, and gets its name from the black uniforms that are still used today. It is one of the most prestigious horsemanship schools in the world. The historic role of the Saumur School of Cavalry was to provide training for the officers and non commissioned officers of the French cavalry. After World War II the mounted element of the French Army had been reduced to a few squadrons of spahi s disbanded in 1962 and the primarily ceremonial Cavalry of the Republican Guard . While the need for a purely military riding academy had almost vanished, the international prestige of French horsemanship ensured the survival of the Saumur training centre in the form of a national riding school under the Ministry of Sports. Accordingly in 1972, the Armoured Branch and Cavalry Training School National School of quitation was constituted around the Cadre Noir, which form its core teaching staff. Today, there are about 50 horses and a team of elite riders, usually limited to 22. The members of the Cadre Noir have either civilian or military status. Some of the riders have reached the highest level of international sport, being Olympic or world champions. The equitation on which the school is built was taught by Francois Robichon de la Gueriniere , the French riding master to King Louis XV and author of the book cole de Cavalerie, which was published in 1731. The Cadre Noir mainly uses Thoroughbred s, Anglo Arabian s, Hanoverian horse Hanoverian s and Selle Fran ais , but also keeps Lusitano horses to demonstrate the 16th and 17th century baroque style of riding. The Thoroughbreds and Anglo Arabians are used for the Grand Prix dressage, and perform individually, pas de deux two horses , pas de trois three horses , and d e quantit four or more horses . 1. Rarey technique

unreferenced date April 2012 Image Rarey and Cruiser.jpg thumb right John Rarey and Cruiser, illustration from The Complete Horse Tamer by John Rarey, 1860 The Rarey technique is a method of calming horse s that have become vicious and fearful of humans due to abusive handling or other traumatic events. It is named for its inventor, John Solomon Rarey 1827&ndash 1866 of Groveport, Ohio , United States of America USA , who became famous for taming violent horses with it, and later for teaching it in various countries around the world. The technique Image Rarey hobble.jpg thumb right Illustrations from The Complete Horse Tamer by John Rarey, 1860 Image Rarey going down.jpg thumb right Image Rarey down.jpg thumb right Rarey began by tying one of the traumatized horse s legs with a strap so that the horse could not stand on it. This gave him control over the horse and quickly tired the animal out. Then, Rarey would gently but firmly cause the horse to lie down on a comfortable surface. Once the horse was lying on its side, Rarey could use his weight, concentrated at a strategic point, to keep the horse from rising. While the horse was thus unable to protect itself, Rarey showed it that it was still entirely safe with him by touching and stroking it on all parts of its body. The result was that the horse learned that it could be entirely safe in Rarey s company, and from that beginning it was relatively easy to demonstrate to the horse that it did not need to protect itself from most other humans. 1. High Plains (Australia)

The High Plains of South Eastern Australia are a region, or more strictly a string of adjacent areas, in and adjacent to the Great Dividing Range . They were long used for summer grazing , in some cases since the 1830s. Much of the region is now National park National Park . Consisting as it does of a weathered plateau divided by deep gorges, the High Plains region provided natural paddocks. The higher areas were natural grassed pastures, and lower areas were cleared of the native forest by settlers, some of whom had grazing licenses while others were merely squatters. Fences were necessary only for stockyards, as during summer the cattle had no incentive to wander into the forests or down the steep gorges. However it was essential to muster the cattle in autumn before colder weather, and even snowfalls, drove them down into the gorges. If this happened because of unseasonably early snow, or other factors, the cattle might be lost or might go feral . Drover Australian Droving cattle to and from these summer pastures a practice known as yaylag pastoralism presented enormous challenges of horsemanship. In this part of the world, the easiest trails normally follow the ridges, not the valleys. Attempts by early explorers to follow the valleys ended in sheer cliffs. However, persuading cattle to climb a narrow spur in order to follow a ridge route required skill and courage. Such routes were also unsuitable for all but the strongest wheeled vehicles, and slow and risky even for bullock dray s, so pack horses were the more common way of transporting freight. Many of Australia s favourite stories and poems originated in this area, notably The Man from Snowy River poem The Man from Snowy River .
