  1. Caerphilly District Miners Hospital

Caerphilly District Miners Hospital was a Hospital in Caerphilly The hospital was built in 1923 to provide healthcare to the 24,000 miners who worked in the 29 pits of the Rhymney Valley and their families. It was acquired by the miners from Mr Fred Piggott, a coal mining engineer , and was at that stage a red brick mansion known as The Beeches. The wards of the hospital are named after the local pits whose miners contributed to the funds that financed the building of the hospital Nantgarw, Penallta, Bedwas , Llanbradach , Caerphilly Nelson , and Senghenydd. The mines have all now closed, so the hospital now runs as part of the NHS Wales NHS serving the people of Caerphilly county borough Caerphilly Borough . Another mansion nearby along St Martin s Road, Redbrook House, provided accommodation and teaching to the hospital s nurses, but this was demolished controversially in the early 1970s to make way for a housing development. 1. Disabled (poem)

About the poem by Wilfred Owen disability disabled Wikisource Disabled unreferenced date November 2010 Disabled is a war poem by Wilfred Owen written in 1917. It expresses the tormented thoughts and recollections of a teenaged soldier in World War I who has lost his limbs in battle and is now confined, utterly helpless, to a wheelchair. The subject contrasts the living death he is now facing with the youthful pleasures he had enjoyed before he threw away his knees he goes on to recall the impetuous and frivolous circumstances in which he had joined up to fight in the war. He also notes how the crowds that greeted his return were smaller and less enthusiastic than those who cheered his departure, and how women no longer look at him but at the strong men who were whole . 1. Miners in the Sky

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Miners in The Sky is a 1967 Science Fiction novel by Murray Leinster . The rings around Thotmess, a gas giant in the system of the star Niletus where planets are called for Ancient Egyptian gods, is a completely lawless place. The only human inhabitants are rugged miners, riding small donkey ships , who need to contend with both the harsh natural environment and fierce human competitors. Claim jumping is frequent and miners must be ready at any moment to take up a gun or a bazooka to defend their finds of grey matrix in which abyssal crystals occur . The reader is not told what this may be, except that it is evidently valuable enough to kill for. The extra solar environment is chosen by Leinster in order to convey the feeling of an ever expanding frontier Sol s own Asteroid Belt has become tame , as did the rings of Saturn , and the rough adventurous types move further on. Leinster s historical model is obviously the recurring Gold Rush of the Nineteenth Century, drawing adventurers in 1840s from the settled East Coast to wild California, and in 1890s from settled California to the wild Klondike, Yukon Klondike .
