    William Hugh Kenner January 7, 1923 &ndash November 24, 2003 , was a Canadian literary scholar, critic and professor. Kenner was born in Peterborough, Ontario on January 7, 1923 his father taught classics . Kenner attributed his interest in literature to his poor hearing, caused by a bout of influenza during his childhood. Attending the University of Toronto , Kenner studied under Marshall McLuhan , who wrote the introduction to Kenner s first book Paradox in Chesterton , about G. K. Chesterton s works. Kenner s second book, The Poetry of Ezra Pound 1951 was dedicated to McLuhan, who had introduced Kenner to Ezra Pound Pound on June 4, 1948, during Pound s incarceration at St. Elizabeths Hospital , Washington, D.C. , where Kenner and McLuhan had driven as a detour from their trip from Toronto to New Haven, Connecticut .     Scipio African Kenner , usually known as S. A. Kenner 1852 1913 was an editor and politician in territorial and early statehood Utah. Kenner was born in Saint Francisville, Missouri and came to Utah with a Mormon company in 1860. He was baptized a member of the LDS Church in 1865. In 1871 Kenner married Isabella Park who he had become acquainted with while involved in dramatic productions in Salt Lake City . They eventually became the parents of nine children. Kenner worked as a telegraph operator and began as a journeyman with the Deseret News . He progressed up the ranks of the newspaper and eventually made it to being an editor. At times Kenner was the editor for both the Provo Times and the Ogden Standard . Kenner was admitted to the bar after studying under Judge Sutherland. Kenner worked as a city attorney, LDS Church attorney and assistant U.S. attorney. Kenner served as a member of the Utah State Legislature. Kenner was born illegitimate in Vienna Wien and raised by his mother born Harl in Linz with the musical de Anton von Spaun von Spaun family. He attended the seminary of Kremsm nster Abbey from 1805 1811 where he met Franz von Schober and de Franz X. Schlechta von Wschehrd Franz von Schlechta . He then entered the seminary in Vienna where he met the composer Franz Schubert, who set several of his poems to music. His close friendship extended to others in Schubert s circle including painter Moritz von Schwind , who approved of Kenner s own paintings including a cycle of martyr illustrations, Der Liedler. Biography Born in New Orleans, Louisiana New Orleans , Kenner became a wealthy sugar planter. He used scientific techniques and was said to be the first man in Louisiana to use a railroad to bring sugar cane from the fields to the mill. Kenner served for several terms in the Louisiana House of Representatives and was a member of the state constitutional conventions of 1845 and 1852, having presided over the latter conclave. Kenner was a member of the Confederate Congress and chairman of its Ways and Means Committee. In 1862, he proposed a national income tax of 20 , including a schedule of exemptions.
