He was educated at Oundle School Oundle and Caius College, Cambridge , where he joined Footlights . He briefly attended the Central School of Speech and Drama , before appearing in White Cargo at the Brixton Theatre in 1936. After being called up in 1940, he was commissioned to the 34th Light AA Regiment and saw active service in the Middle East and India between 1941 and 1945. He was married to Sheila Gairns. Latimer studied at Oxford University , attaining the degree of Bachelor of Arts before being admitted as a Fellow Oxford, Cambridge and Dublin fellow of All Souls College, Oxford in 1489. In the 1490s Latimer went to Italy in order to study Greek, he was eventually awarded an Master of Arts postgraduate MA by the University of Ferrara in 1502. Shortly after returning to England in 1502, Latimer took holy orders . Throughout the rest of his life he combined his travels and studies with a career in the priesthood. He also spent several spells serving as a teacher at Canterbury College, Oxford, where, amongst others, he taught Reginald Pole . Latimer was one of the foremost scholars of his age, a fact attested by his selection as Pole s tutor and his role as an advisor to Henry VIII of England Henry VIII on the theological implications of his divorce from Catherine of Aragon . Latimer was also a correspondent of Thomas More and Desiderius Erasmus , the latter specifically seeking Latimer s help during his translation of the New Testament . Although the precise date of his death is unknown, Latimer died at some point between April and October 1545 the dates that his will was successively made and proven. Latimer published two highly acclaimed novels, We Are Incredible 1928 and This is My Body 1930 , and two collections of short stories , Nellie Bloom and Other Stories 1929 , and Guardian Angel and Other Stories 1932 . Her formally experimental fiction was greatly influenced by the modernism of the 1920s, and reviewers of the period compared her to Gertrude Stein , James Joyce , and D. H. Lawrence . Her work reflects her feminist, socialist, and anti racist ideals. Latimer was mentored by her Portage neighbor Zona Gale , the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama, whose ideology and style of writing were more traditional than that of her protege. The two writers had a deep and often difficult relationship. Latimer attended the University of Wisconsin Madison on a Zona Gale scholarship and maintained an intimate correspondence with her mentor until about the time of Gale s marriage in 1928.
