Hughie is a short two character play by Eugene O Neill set in the lobby of a small hotel on a West Side street in midtown New York during the summer of 1928. The play is essentially a long monologue delivered by a small time hustler named Erie Smith to the hotel s new night clerk Charlie Hughes, lamenting how Smith s luck has gone bad since the death of Hughie, Hughes predecessor. Eugene O Neill O Neill wrote Hughie in 1942, although it did not receive its world premiere until 1958, when it was staged in Sweden at the Royal Dramatic Theatre with Bengt Eklund as Erie Smith. Eugene Vincent Hughie Carroll 17 January 1885&ndash 18 September 1965 was an Australian cricketer who played first class cricket for Victorian Bushrangers Victoria between 1905&ndash 06 and 1923&ndash 24. A specialist right hand batsman , Carroll was born and raised in South Melbourne, and joined the local Casey South Melbourne Cricket Club South Melbourne Cricket Club as a youth. He had a long association with South, and during the 1930s he coached the future Australia national cricket team Australian cricket captains Lindsay Hassett and Ian Johnson cricketer Ian Johnson , as well as Australia s greatest all rounder, Keith Miller . In total, Carroll played 37 first class matches most of them before World War I for the modest return of 1,706 runs at an batting average average of 26.24.
