  1. Huneric

Huneric or Honeric died December 23, 484 was King of the Vandals 477 484 and the oldest son of Genseric . He dropped the imperial politics of his father and concentrated mainly on internal affairs. He was married to Princess Eudocia Eudocia , daughter of western Roman Emperors Roman Emperor Valentinian III 419 455 and Licinia Eudoxia . She left him, probably in 472. She had one son by him, Hilderic . Huneric was the first Vandal king who used the title King of the Vandals and Alans . Despite adopting this style, and that the Vandals maintained their sea power and their hold on the islands of the western Mediterranean Sea , Huneric did not have the prestige that his father Genseric had enjoyed with other states. His reign Although Huneric was a fervent adherent to Arianism , his reign opened with making a number of positive overtures towards the local Roman population. Following the visit of a diplomatic mission from the Eastern Roman Empire led by Alexander, Huneric restored properties seized by his father from the merchants of Carthage . ref Malchus, fragment 13. 1. Gunthamund

Unreferenced date February 2007 Gunthamund c. 450 496 , King of the Vandals and Alans 484 496 was the third king of the north African Kingdom of the Vandals. He succeeded his unpopular uncle Huneric , and for that reason alone, enjoyed a rather successful reign. Gunthamund was the second son born to Gento, the fourth and youngest son of Genseric , the founder of the Vandal kingdom in Africa. Because most of Genseric s immediate family was dead, Gunthamund found himself as the eldest male member of the family when Huneric died in 484. In accordance with his grandfather s laws on the succession, he was proclaimed king. Gunthamund benefited throughout his reign from the fact that the Vandals most powerful rivals, the Visigoths , Ostrogoths , and the Byzantine Empire , were all heavily involved in wars. Although the Vandals power had fallen off greatly since its zenith under Genseric, they enjoyed peace under Gunthamund. Gunthamund also eased up on the persecutions of the Roman Catholic Church Catholics that had begun under Huneric, a move which eased some of the unrest in his kingdom, and stabilized the kingdom s economy, which was on the verge of collapse under Huneric. Unfortunately for the Vandals, Gunthamund followed in the footsteps of his immediate family and died rather young, in his mid forties. He was succeeded by his brother Thrasamund , who was not as effective in ruling the kingdom. s start s reg s bef before Huneric s ttl title Vandal King of the Vandals years 484&ndash 496 s aft after Thrasamund end Persondata Metadata see Wikipedia Persondata . 1. Tubunae in Mauretania

Tubunae is a Catholic titular see . The original diocese was in Mauretania Caesariensis , according to the Gerachia cattolica , or in Numidia according to Battandier , Annuaire pontifical catholique Paris, 1910 , 345. The official list of the Roman Curia does not mention it. The confusion is explained by the fact that it was located at the boundary of the two provinces. Bocking , in his notes to the Notitia dignitatum Bonn, 1839 523, and Toulotte Greg. de l Afrique chret., Mauretanies , Montreuil, 1894, p.  171 , speak of two distinct cities, while Muller Notes to Ptolemy , IV, 12, ed. Didot, I, 611 admits only one. It was a municipium and also an important frontier post in command of a praepositus limitis Tubuniensis . Augustine of Hippo and Alypius of Constantinople Alypius sojourned there as guests of Count Boniface Ep. ccxx . In 479 Huneric exiled a large number of Catholics there. Its ruins, known as Tobna, are in the Department of Constantine, Algeria , at the gates of the Sahara, west of the Chott el Hodna , the Salinae Tubunenses of the Romans. They are very extensive, for three successive towns occupied different sites, under the Romans, the Byzantines, and the Arabs. Besides the remains of the fortress, the most remarkable monument is a church now used as a mosque. Bishops Three bishops of Tubunae are known. St. Nemesianus assisted at the Council of Carthage in 256. St. Cyprian often speaks of him in his letters, and we have a letter which he wrote to St. Cyprian in his own name and in the name of those who were condemned with him to the mines. An inscription testifies to his cult at Tixter in 360, and the Roman Martyrology mentions him on 10 September. Another bishop was Cresconius , who usurped the see after quitting the Bulla Regia , and assisted at the Council of Carthage in 411, where his rival was the Donatist Protasius . A third, Reparatus, was exiled by Huneric in 484. References reflist Attribution Catholic wstitle Tubunae The entry cites Toul ...   more details

  1. Lesbi

Lesbi or Lesvi is a Roman Catholic titular bishopric in the former Ecclesiastical province Roman Catholic province of Mauretania Sitifensis , suffragan of Sitifis , or S tif , in modern Algeria . It is not, as is sometimes stated, the Island of Lesbos , which never was a titular bishopric, but possesses two titular archbishoprics Mytilene and Methymna . Of Lesbi we only know, from the Itinerarium Antonini , that it was situated twenty five miles from Tupusuctu or Tiklat, and eighteen miles from Horrea Aninici , now Ain Roua , south of B ja a . The town, therefore, was on the Sava, i.e. the Oued Bou Sellam, but there are no remains to be seen. 1. Princess Eudocia

Eudocia redirects here for her mother, see Licinia Eudoxia for her grandmother, the Eastern Empress, see Aelia Eudocia for women of similar names, see Eudoxia . Eudocia , or Eudoxia 439 &ndash 466 474? was the eldest daughter of Roman emperor Valentinian III and his wife, Licinia Eudoxia . She was thus the granddaughter on her mother s side of Eastern emperor Theodosius II and his wife, the poet Aelia Eudocia and on her father s side of Western emperor Constantius III and his wife Galla Placida . In the mid 440s, at age 5, Eudocia was betrothed to Huneric , son of the Vandal king Gaiseric and then a hostage in Italy . This engagement served to strengthen the alliance between the Western court and the Vandal kingdom in Africa. Their marriage did not take place at this time, however, because Eudocia was not yet of age. Eudocia s father was assassinated in 455, and his successor, Petronius Maximus , compelled Eudocia s mother to marry him and Eudocia herself to marry his son, Palladius Caesar Palladius . In response, the Vandals reportedly at the request of Eudocia s mother invaded Italy and captured Eudocia, her mother, and her younger sister, Placidia . Eudocia s mother and sister were sent to Constantinople, while Eudocia remained in Africa and married Huneric c. 460. They had a son, Hilderic , who reigned as king of the Vandals, from 523 530. At some time following the birth of Hilderic, Eudocia withdrew to Jerusalem due to religious differences with her Arianism Arian husband. She died there and was buried in the sepulcher of her grandmother, Aelia Eudocia. 1. Victor Vitensis

Victor Vitensis b. circa 430 was an African bishop of the Province of Byzacena called Vitensis from his See of Vita, Byzacena Vita . His importance rests on his Historia persecutionis Africanae Provinciae, temporibus Geiserici et Hunirici regum Wandalorum . This is mainly a contemporary narrative of the cruelties practised against the orthodox Christians of Northern Africa by the Arianism Arian Vandals . Formerly divided into five books, this work is now usually edited in three, of which the first, dealing with the reign of Geiseric 427 77 , is derived from the accounts of others, while the second and third, covering the reign of Huneric , are a strictly contemporary account of events, of which the author was in the main an eyewitness. At times he exaggerates, but he records little that did not happen. Victor throws much light on social and religious conditions in Carthage and on the African liturgy of the period. His history contains many documents not otherwise accessible, e.g. the Confession of Faith drawn up for the orthodox bishops by Eugenius of Carthage and presented to Huneric at the conference of Catholic and Arian bishops in 484. Two documents a Passio beatissimorum martyrum qui apud Carthaginem passi sunt sub impio rege Hunerico die VI. Non. Julias 484 and a Notitia Provinciarum et Civitatum Africae List of the Provinces and Cities of Africa , formerly appended to all the manuscripts and now incorporated in the printed editions, are probably not Victor s. The former may be the work of one of his contemporaries. The latter is a list of the Catholic bishops who were summoned to the 484 conference and their Episcopal see s in the Latin provinces of North Africa, arranged according to provinces in this order Proconsularis, Numidia, Byzacena, Mauretania Caesariensis, Mauretania Sitifensis, Tripolitana, Sardinia .
