  1. Bremen cog

Bremen cog or Bremer Kogge is a wreck of a Cog ship cog dated to 1380 found in 1962 in Bremen. Today it is displayed at the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven . There are also three relatively identical Bremen cog replicas built namely Ubena von Bremen , Hansekogge and Roland von Bremen . On 8 October 1962 during the dredging operations fragments of the ship were found in the Weser River . It turned out to be the remnants of a cog that seems to have sunk before completion. Based on the Dendrochronology dendrochronological analysis of the oak timber from which the cog was built the ship was dated to about 1380 AD. The search for more shipwreck fragments continued until July 1965 and yielded over 2,000 individual pieces of the ship. The fragments were transferred to the German Maritime Museum for preservation. In 1999 after 19 years of reconstruction the preservation was finished and the ship is now on display at the designated Koggenhalle of the German Maritime Museum. The precise dimensions of the Bremen cog were 24m long, 8m in the beam and just over 4m high on the sides. These measurements would have produced an estimated load capacity of 130 tons. ref Susan Rose, The Medieval Sea, 2007 ref See also Kolding cog References reflist External links http www.dsm.museum MA kogge.htm Bremen cog at the German Maritime Museum Category Archaeology of shipwrecks Category Ships preserved in museums de Bremer Kogge 1380 ...   more details

  1. Cog (project)

Cog was a project at the Humanoid Robotics Group of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . It was based on the hypothesis that human level intelligence requires gaining experience from interacting with humans, like human infants do. This in turn requires many interactions with humans over a long period. Because Cog s behavior responds to what humans would consider appropriate and socially salient environmental stimulation stimuli , the robot is expected to act more human. This behavior also provides the robot with a better context for deciphering and imitation imitating human behavior. This is intended to allow the robot to learn socially, as humans do. As of 2003, all development of the project had ceased. Purpose of the Cog Project To study theories of cognitive science and artificial intelligence AI . Goals of the Cog Project To design and fabricate a humanoid face for each robot that fosters suitable social contact between robots and humans. To create a robot which is capable of interacting with humans and objects in a human like way. To develop a relatively general system by which Cog can learn causal relations between commands to its motors and input from its sensors primarily vision and mechanical proprioception . To shift the robot aesthetic to a design language that utilizes strong curvilinear and organic forms through state of the art design processes and materials. Founded by self described DIY Punk Robb Rathe, the Cog Factory served as the launching pad for the careers of many Saddle Creek Records bands, as well as being a tour stop for national acts. All the proceeds from shows were used to cover the building expenses and payment of artists. Numerous volunteers tried keeping the club going until 2002, when Cog Factory ceased to operate. With all the original founding volunteers no longer operating Cog Factory after 2001, its original goal of providing an all ages venue for every type of independent music free of discrimination started to erode. 1. Cog's Ladder

Cog s Ladder of group development is based on the work, Cog s Ladder A Model of Group Growth , by George O. Charrier , an employee of Procter and Gamble , published in a company newsletter in 1972. The original document was written to help group managers at Procter and Gamble better understand the dynamics of group work, thus improving efficiency. It is now also used by the United States Naval Academy , the United States Air Force Academy , and other businesses to help in understanding group development. Stages The basic idea of Cog s Ladder is that there are five steps necessary for a small group of people to be able to work efficiently together. These stages are the polite stage , the why we re here stage , the power stage , the cooperation stage and the esprit stage . Groups can only move forward after completing the current stage as in Jean Piaget s stage model. Polite Stage An introductory phase where members strive to get acquainted or reacquainted with one another. During this phase, the basis for the group structure is established and is characterized by polite social interaction. All ideas are simple, controversy is avoided and all members limit self disclosure. Judgements of other members are formed, and this sets the tone for the rest of the group s time. Why We re Here Stage Group members will want to know why they have been called together. The specific agenda for each planning session will be communicated by the moderator or leader. In this phase, individual need for approval begins to diminish as the members examine their group s purpose and begin to set goals. Often, social cliques will begin to form as members begin to feel as though they fit in. Power Stage ...
