The 1974 Hunza Earthquake was a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in the rugged and isolated Hunza Valley Hunza , Hazara, Pakistan Hazara and Swat Pakistan Swat districts of northern Pakistan at 12 11 UTC on December 28, 1974. The epicentre was located at 35.1 degrees north and 72.9 degrees east. The quake had a shallow focal depth and was followed by numerous aftershocks. An official estimate of the number killed was 5,300 with approximately 17,000 injured. A total of 97,000 were reported affected by the tremor. Most of the destruction was centred around the village of Pattan, Baramula district Pattan , located about convert 100 mi km north of the capital city of Islamabad . The village was almost completely destroyed. The epicental region is characterized by steep walled narrow canyon s and valley s. Most of the population was concentrated along the rivers. Much of the destruction was caused by the numerous landslide s and rockfall s which came tumbling down from high above. The main road leading into the area was blocked for about convert 25 mi km by landslides and rockfalls, hampering relief efforts. The government flew in emergency supplies by helicopter until the roads were reopened on 13th of January. The earthquake, which reached Mercalli intensity scale MMI V in Kabul , Afghanistan , affected some convert 1000 sqmi km2 of the Indus Valley region. Hunza Valley has generally three parts, namely Lower Hunza , Centre Hunza and Upper Hunza . The lower part includes mainly four villages namely Hussainabad, Mayon, Khanabad and Nasirabad old name Hini in Shina and Hindi in Brushiski . Historically Shinakis are considered straightforward, brave and loyal. In older times, Mir title Mir The ruler of Hunza had special army mostly consisted of Shinakis. Shinakis were the last to convert into Ismaili Muslims 99 of Hunza s population is Ismaili . Currently, Hunza Shinaki is composed of five villages Nasirabad, Mayoon, Khanabad, Hussainabad and Khizerabad. Among these Nasirabad and Mayoon are old settlements, These two villages used to be the first bastions of defense of Hunza in old times. People from Nasirabad and Mayoon bore the brunt of wars and battles of Hunza with Sikhs, British and other forces in late 19th century. There is a gorge where people of Mayoon wiped out an army of 500 Sikhs in a single night. This area is famous as Sikh Mara Jung . Colonel Durand got wounded from a gunshot reportedly fired from Mayoon Fort. Incessant engagement with outside threat kept Shinaki people in combative mood all the time.
