context date December 2010 The National Hydrography Dataset NHD is the surface water component of The National Map for the United States. It is used to represent surface water on maps and is also used to perform geospatial analysis. The NHD is a digital vector geospatial dataset designed for use in geographic information systems GIS for these two purposes. It contains features such as lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, canals, dams and streamgages that produce 7.5 million miles of streams rivers and 6.5 million lake ponds. In mapping, the NHD is used with other data themes such as elevation, boundaries, and transportation to produce general reference maps. In geospatial analysis the NHD is used by scientists using GIS technology. This takes advantage of a rich set of attributes that can be processed to generate specialized information. These analyses are possible because the NHD contains a flow direction network that traces the water downstream or upstream. It also uses an addressing system to link specific information about the water such as water discharge, water quality, and fish population. Using the basic water features, flow network, linked information, and other characteristics, it is possible to study cause and effect relationships, such as how a source of poor water quality upstream might affect a fish population downstream. The river flows by the province of C cuta, passing through the neighbouring nation of Venezuela , and ends in the waters of Lake Maracaibo. In Colombian territory, this river is navigable for about 70 kilometers, starting from the old port of Los Canchos. The river flows for 260 kilometers through Venezuela, the last 80 kilometers being deep and calm, adaptable to embarkments of big proportions. In the past, this river provided a basic means of transportation which was responsible for much of prosperity of the neighbouring valleys, like the center of nutritioned commerce, whose products fed many of the towns nearby. The Zulia river s tributaries include the Cucutilla, Arboleda, Salazar and the Peralonso rivers, which flow from the left bank, and the Pamplonita with its own tributaries the Tachira and the De la Grita rivers, entering from the right. Areas surrounding the Zulia river are fertile, with many forests decorating the landscape. However, the climate of this area could be seen as unhealthy, due to the density of trees and the many ... Image Sfestuaryhistorical.gif thumb right The Hydrography of the San Francisco Bay Area is a complex network of watersheds, marshes, rivers, creeks, reservoirs, and bays predominantly draining into the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean . Bays The largest bodies of water in the Bay Area are the San Francisco Bay , San Pablo Bay , and Suisun Bay . The San Francisco Bay is one of the largest bays in the world. Many inlets on the edges of the three major bays are designated as bays in their own right, such as Richardson Bay , San Rafael Bay , Grizzly Bay , and San Leandro Bay . Nearby bays along the Pacific Coast include Bodega Bay , Tomales Bay , Drakes Bay , Bolinas Bay , and Half Moon Bay . Rivers The largest rivers are the Sacramento River Sacramento and San Joaquin River San Joaquin Rivers which drain into the Sacramento San Joaquin River Delta and thence to Suisun Bay . Other major rivers of the North Bay San Francisco Bay Area North Bay are the Napa River , the Petaluma River , the Gualala River , and the Russian River California Russian River the former two drain into San Pablo Bay , the latter two into the Pacific Ocean . In the South Bay, the Guadalupe River California Guadalupe River drains into San Francisco Bay near Alviso, San Jose, California Alviso . See List of watercourses in the San Francisco Bay Area Creeks The Bay Area has a network of streams that are generally called creeks, but sometimes called arroyos, due to the Spanish language heritage evident in names such as Santa Rosa Creek and San Pablo Creek . Due to low rainfall in the summer months May October , many Bay Area creeks are intermittent, flowing above ground only during part of the year. For general context Oak Ridges Moraine Preliminary research on the hydrology of the Oak Ridges Moraine began in the 1970s, but a broader research effort including the impact of urban development on the aquifer system and Great Lakes water quality was established in 1993. Ref gsoc The research locus is the Geological Survey of Canada and the University of Toronto Groundwater Research Group, though other groups have made substantial contributions to this project. The moraine serves to recharge streams and rivers in the surrounding region, acting as an underground reservoir water reservoir . Rain and snow melt slowly soak into the moraine, being filtered and purified in its many sand and gravel aquifers. The cool, fresh water is discharged into the headwaters of streams and rivers which eventually flow into Lake Simcoe , Lake Scugog and Lake Ontario . The aquifers are also the water supply for some communities on the Moraine. Hydrogeology The moraine s hydrological system is inter twined with a regional flow system not bound by the morphological limits of the moraine. Ref hydrology For this reason, environmentalists and researchers promote an aggressive protection strategy extending beyond the moraine, thus ensuring a contiguously protected hydrological system. A number of features comprise the hydrological system of the Oak Ridges Moraine Ref features permanent and ephemeral streams, wetlands , kettle lakes and ponds, and their catchment areas, seepage areas and springs, and aquifers and other recharge areas. Hydrology The Oak Ridges Moraine s hydrological system is a major constituent of the Humber Watershed , so that any impact on this system will be of concern. A specific concern is urbanization, which affects water quality by increasing its load of metals and organic contaminants. Jean Mathieu de Chazelles 24 July 1657 &ndash 16 January 1710 , France French hydrography hydrographer , was born in Lyon . He was nominated professor of hydrography at Marseilles in 1685, and in that capacity carried out various coast surveys. In 1693 he was engaged to publish a second volume of the Neptune fran ais , which was to, include the hydrography of the Mediterranean . For this purpose he visited the Levant and Egypt . When in Egypt he measured the pyramids , and, finding that the angles formed by the sides of the largest were in the direction of the four cardinal points, he concluded that this position must have been intended, and also that the Geographical pole pole s of the earth and meridian geography meridian s had not deviated since the erection of those structures.
