In an ideal system, the depth of the recirculating stream should be very shallow, little more than a film of water, hence the name nutrient film . This ensures that the thick root mat, which develops in the bottom of the channel, has an upper surface, which, although moist, is in the air. Subsequent to this, an abundant supply of oxygen is provided to the roots of the plants. A properly designed NFT system is based on using the right channel slope, the right flow rate, and the right channel length. The main advantage of the NFT system over other forms of hydroponics is that the plant roots are exposed to adequate supplies of water, oxygen and nutrients. In all other forms of production, there is a conflict between the supply of these requirements, since excessive or deficient amounts of one results in an imbalance of one or both of the others. NFT, because of its design, provides a system wherein all three requirements for healthy plant growth can be met at the same time, provided that the simple concept of NFT is always remembered and practiced. The result of these advantages is that higher yields of high quality produce are obtained over an extended period of cropping. Fictional character biography Chlorophyll Kid was born Ral Benem on the planet Mardru. As a young man, he accidentally fell into a tank of hydroponic serum which gave him the power to stimulate plant growth. He can grow seeds into full grown plants in a second. Ral can also direct the growth of vines so that they wrap around a person, trapping them. He has also claimed that he can talk to plants. Ral possesses an extensive knowledge regarding all types of plants and seeds. He carries a variety of seeds in his costume for various uses. He tries out for the Legion of Super Heroes , but is rejected when the Legion decides that his power would not be useful on missions. Along with several other failed applicants, he helps form the Legion of Substitute Heroes . Chlorophyll Kid appears in the one shot Legion of Substitute Heroes comic book, where he is portrayed in a more comical fashion. In this story, Chlorophyll Kid is shown to have put on much weight. In the Action Comics storyline Superman and the Legion of Super Heroes , Chlorophyll Kid and his fellow substitutes are sent to distract the renegade Justice League . Chlorophyll Kid is shown to have much greater control over his powers, and he battles Storm Boy successfully. His hands now take on a plant like appearance when he uses his powers. Plot Dr. Frank Matson, a physician, steals 200,000 from mob boss John Wheeler henchmen after a robbery Wheeler and henchman Ollie have pulled off. Forced to go on the run, Matson also takes Wheeler s girlfriend Laura Thorsen with him. After hiding out in Mexico, word gets back to Matson that Wheeler knows where he is. He and Laura go back to Los Angeles planning to return the money, only to find Wheeler has been shot by Ollie. About to meet the same fate, Matson produces a gun and kills Ollie instead.
