Image Tinkerhypoalert.jpg thumb right Deceased hypo alert dog Tinker and his diabetic owner Paul Jackson from Durham, UK A hypo alert dog is a type of assistance dog trained to provide alerts to their diabetic owners when their blood sugar levels start to become hypoglycemic and sometimes hyperglycemic also. ref http www.usatoday.com yourlife pets dogs 2010 10 14 diabetesdogs14 ST N.htm?loc interstitialskip Dogs alert diabetes patients when blood sugar is off ref Description Hypo alert dogs are trained to alert diabetic owners in advance of low hypoglycemia or high hyperglycemia blood sugar events before they become dangerous, so their owners can take steps to return their blood sugar to normal, such as using glucose sweets or taking insulin. The dogs are trained to accompany their owners wherever they travel in the manner as guide dog s and assistance dog s. In the UK the scheme is overseen by Cancer & Bio Detection Dogs. In 2009 a dog named Tinker from Durham City, now deceased, became the first British assistance dog to be officially registered for a type 2 diabetic owner. He was able to give his owner Paul Jackson up to half an hour warning before an attack occurred. The training process is done much like that of a termite detection dog. The dog is rewarded for finding a high blood sugar it is supposed to smell like tutty fruity gum or the low blood sugar that is supposed to smell like rusty water or nail polish remover. The dogs will alert on other diabetics beyond their handler. 1. Intravenous sugar solution

An intravenous sugar solution is a solution with a sugar usually glucose , a.k.a. dextrose, with water as the solvent used for intravenous therapy , where it may function both as a volume expander and a means of parenteral nutrition . Types Types of glucose dextrose include D5W 5 dextrose in water , which consists of 278  mmol L dextrose D5NS 5 dextrose in normal saline , which, in addition, contains normal saline 0.90 percentage solution w v of sodium chloride NaCl . Glucose provides energy 4 kcal gram, so a 5 glucose solution provides 0.2 kilocalories kcal ml. If prepared from dextrose monohydrate , which provides 3.4 kcal gram, a 5 solution provides 0.17 kcal ml. ref http health.csusb.edu dchen 368 20stuff TPN 20calculation.htm Calculating Parenteral Feedings D. 1. GSK716155

Multiple issues expert subject June 2008 orphan February 2009 confusing February 2009 GSK716155 Albugon is a recombinant Human Glucagon like Peptide GLP 1 Albumin Protein created using Human Genome Sciences proprietary albumin fusion technology, which involves fusing the gene that expresses human albumin to the gene that expresses a therapeutically active protein GLP 1 sup 1 sup . It is an agonist of the Glucagon like Peptide 1 Receptor GLP1R and is currently undergoing clinical drug trials for treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. The fusing of therapeutic proteins to human albumin decreases clearance and prolongs the half life of therapeutically active proteins in the body sup 1 sup . GSK716155 and other GLP 1 agonists effects GSK716155 mimics the effects of GLP 1 which activates GLP 1 receptors on beta cells in the pancreas sup 2 sup . GLP 1 is a 30 amino acid peptide hormone from a family called incretins secreted from gut endocrine cells that acts throughout the body to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels and to control appetite. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance, relative insulin deficiency and hyperglycemia. Normally GLP 1 levels rise during a meal to help the body utilize and control the elevation in blood sugar levels, but this response is hindered in Type 2 diabetics sup 3 sup . If injected to treat hyperglycemia it stimulates insulin production and inhibits glucagon secretion in the pancreas. GLP 1 itself can be used to treat diabetes, but it only has a half life of around 5 minutes by attaching the albumin this half life is significantly increased, so that there are detectable levels 11 15 hours after administration sup 2 sup . GLP 1 also contributes to the health and survival of the insulin producing cells in the body. Studies in rodents and humans illustrate that the incretin hormones play a central role in the homeostasis of pancreatic cell mass as well as function. Chronic treatment of both normal and ...   more details

  1. Pediatric endocrinology

Pediatric endocrinology British English British Paediatric is a medical subspecialty dealing with variations of physical human development biology growth and sexual development in childhood, as well as diabetes and other disorders of the endocrine gland s. By age, pediatric endocrinologists, depending upon the age range of the patients they treat, care for patients from infancy to late adolescence and young adulthood. By disease, the most common disease of the specialty is type 1 diabetes , which usually accounts for at least 50 of a typical clinical practice. The next most common problem is growth disorders, especially those amenable to growth hormone treatment . Pediatric endocrinologists are usually the primary physicians involved in the medical care of infants and children with intersex disorders. The specialty also deals with hypoglycemia and other forms of hyperglycemia in childhood, variations of puberty , as well other adrenal , thyroid , and pituitary problems. Many pediatric endocrinologists have interests and expertise in bone metabolism, lipid metabolism, adolescent gynecology, or inborn errors of metabolism. In the United States and Canada, pediatric endocrinology is a subspecialty of the American Board of Pediatrics, with board certification following fellowship training. It is a relatively small and primarily cognitive specialty, with few procedures and an emphasis on diagnostic evaluation. Most pediatric endocrinologists in North America and many from around the world can trace their professional genealogy to Lawson Wilkins , who pioneered the specialty in the pediatrics department of Johns Hopkins Medical School and the Harriet Lane Home in Baltimore in between the late 1940s and the mid 1960s. The principal North American professional association was originally named the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society http www.lwpes.org , now renamed the Pediatruic Endocrine Society.
