dablink This article discusses the portal venous systems in general. For the system involving the liver, see Hepatic portalsystem . In the circulatory system of animals, a portal venous system occurs when a capillary bed pools into another capillary bed through vein s, without first going through the heart. Both capillary beds and the blood vessel s that connect them are considered part of the portal venous system. They are relatively uncommon as the majority of capillary beds drain into veins which then drain into the heart , not into another capillary bed. Portal venous systems are considered venous because the blood vessels that join the two capillary beds are either vein s or venule s. Examples of such systems include the hepatic portalsystem and the hypophysealportalsystem . Unqualified, portal venous system often refers to the hepatic portalsystem. For this reason, portal vein most commonly refers to the hepatic portal vein . The functional significance of such a system is that it transports products of one region directly to another region in relatively high concentrations. If the heart was involved in the blood circulation between those two regions, those products would be spread around the rest of the body. In humans The final common pathway for transport of venous blood from spleen, pancreas, gallbladder and the abdominal portion of the gastrointestinal tract with the exception of the inferior part of the anal canal is through the portal vein. The portal vein is formed by the union of the superior mesenteric vein and the splenic vein posterior to the neck of the pancreas at the level of vertebra body LII. Ascending towards the liver, the portal vein passes posterior to the superior part of the duodenum and enters the right margin of the lesser omentum, it is anterior to the omental foramen and posterior to both the bile duct, which is slightly to the right, and the hepatic artery proper, which is slightly to the left. On approaching the liver, the portal ... more details

In computer generated imagery and real time 3D computer graphics , portal rendering is an algorithm for Hidden surface determination visibility determination . For example, consider a 3D computer game environment, which may contain many polygons, only a few of which may be visible on screen at a given time. By determining which polygons are currently not visible, and not rendering those objects, significant performance improvements can be achieved. A portalsystem is based on using the partitioning of space to form generalizations about the visibility of objects within those spaces. Regions of map space are divided into polygonal, generally convex, areas called sectors . Adjacent sectors are linked to one another via shared dividing polygons termed portals . Approaches that pre compute visibility for sectors are referred to as potentially visible set or PVS methods. For example, in a computer game such as Descent video game Descent , the game area might be divided into several sectors . These sectors would then be connected to each other by small openings such as doors or windows. These openings are referred to as portals . When the sector behind a portal needs to be drawn, the only parts that are visible are the parts that can be seen through the portal. Therefore, the sector can be clipping computer graphics clipped against the portal boundaries to remove overdraw. The use of portals simplifies the game engine s task of determining visible areas and objects from any given point of view of the level, and simplifies rendering by allowing it to use each portal as a viewing frustum for the area it leads to. Ideally, portals are formed of confined areas like doors or tunnels , connecting two complex areas of the scene, where each of these areas would be enclosed in such a polygonal ... links http www.flipcode.com archives Building a 3D Portal Engine Issue 01 Introduction.shtml Building a 3D Portal Engine Category Computer graphics compu graphics stub de Portal Based Rendering ... more details

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Portal frame construction is a method of building and designing structures, primarily using steel or steel reinforced precast concrete although they can also be constructed using laminated timber such as Glued laminated timber glulam . The connections between the column s and the rafter s are designed to be Moment physics moment resistant, i.e. they can carry bending forces. Because of these very strong and rigid joints, some of the bending moment in the rafters is transferred to the columns. This means that the size of the rafters can be reduced or the span can be increased for the same size rafters. This makes portal frames a very efficient construction technique to use for wide span buildings. Portal frame construction is therefore typically seen in warehouse s, barn s and other places where large, open spaces are required at low cost and a pitched roof is acceptable. Generally portal frames are used for single story buildings but they can be used for low rise buildings with several floors where they can be economic if the floors do not span right across the building in these circumstances a skeleton frame, with internal columns, would be a more economic choice .
