Unreferenced date January 2007 IBM Product Test was a group level organization for testing of IBM hardware and software products as part of the product development rather than manufacturing . It was housed in a number of laboratories associated with the various manufacturing and software development facilities. As an independent organization, Group Product Test had much power and exercised strict control over product quality. Ultimately, however, its contribution to the bottom line could not be quantified, and it was disbanded in 197? Citation needed date July 2011 . Types of testing Two types of test were performed A or Alpha test These were design and feasibility tests, carried out prior to announcement. In some cases, software modelling was used to estimate performance. B or Beta test These tests were carried out to support a First Customer Ship FCS date for software, or a commit to manufacturing for hardware. Other functions Keeper of Standards Product Test was responsible for keeping and maintaining the body of standards governing the various aspects of design and development of IBM products. Proposed standards were circulated by the Standards Coordinator to other Product Test Laboratories for approval. Special tests Tape drive reel hub When IBM introduced a new form of tape drive reel hub using a latch mechanism to replace the older screw on hub, failure reports began to come in from the field. Improvements were made to the design and subjected to extensive testing with periodic inspections. Initially, the testing was performed manually by repeated mounting and dismounting a tape reel, with everyone in the Lab Poughkeepsie assigned a number of operations, including the Lab Director. The Tilt test is a type of safety test that certain government vehicle certification bodies require new vehicle designs to pass before being allowed on the road or rail track. The test is an assessment of the weight distribution and hence the position of the centre of gravity of the vehicle, and can be carried out in a laden or unladen state, i.e. with or without passengers or freight. The test can be applied to automobile s, truck s, bus es and rail vehicles . The test involves tilting the vehicle in the notional direction of the side of the vehicle, on a movable platform. In order to pass the test, the vehicle must not tip over before a specified angle of tilt is reached by the table. In the United Kingdom , double decker bus es have to quote be capable of leaning, fully laden on top, at an angle of 28 deg without toppling over before they are allowed on the road. ref http www.publications.parliament.uk pa cm198990 cmhansrd 1990 06 05 Debate 1.html Public record of a debate in the UK parliament about a recent coach crash, Column 512 Mr Parkison ref References reflist See also Vehicle metrics Weight distribution Moose test External links http www.mobility.siemens.com shared img www infrastructure logistics neigeeinrichtung l.jpg Siemens Mobility photo of a rail vehicle undergoing a tilt test http www.delainebuses.com Images 141 20Journal 202006 141 20Journal 202006.htm Delaine buses website page detailing order and delivery of the first of new type of bus, including images of a tilt test tech stub Category Vehicles Category Vehicle design Category Mass ... more details

Relational calculus consists of two calculi, the tuple relational calculus and the domain relational calculus , that are part of the relational model for databases and provide a declarative way to specify database queries. This in contrast to the relational algebra which is also part of the relational model but provides a more procedural way for specifying queries. The relational algebra might suggest these steps to retrieve the phone numbers and names of book stores that supply Some Sample Book Join book stores and titles over the BookstoreID. Restrict the result of that join to tuples for the book Some Sample Book . Project the result of that restriction over StoreName and StorePhone. The relational calculus would formulate a descriptive, declarative way Get StoreName and StorePhone for supplies such that there exists a title BK with the same BookstoreID value and with a BookTitle value of Some Sample Book . The relational algebra and the relational calculus are essentially logical equivalence logically equivalent for any algebraic expression, there is an equivalent expression in the calculus, and vice versa. unreferenced date January 2010 In physics and philosophy , a relational theory is a framework to understand reality or a physical system in such a way that the positions and other physical property properties of objects are only meaningful relative to other objects. In a relational spacetime theory, space does not exist unless there are objects in it nor does time exist without event philosophy event s. The relational view proposes that space is contained in objects and that an object represents within itself relationships to other objects. Space can be defined through the relation philosophy relation s among the objects that it contains considering their variations through time. The alternative spatial theory is an absolute theory in which the space exists independently of any objects that can be immersed in it. Someone who has constructed or a relational theory or promotes relational theorising is called a relationist . The relational point of view was advocated by in physics by Gottfried von Leibniz , Ernst Mach in his Mach s principle , and it was rejected by Isaac Newton in his successful description of classical physics . Although Albert Einstein was impressed by Mach s principle, he did not fully incorporate it into his theory of general relativity . Several attempts have been made to formulate a full Machian theory, but most physicists think that none have so far succeeded. For example, see Brans Dicke theory A Relational approach to quantum physics has been developed, in analogy with Einstein s special relativity of space and time. Relationist physicists such as John Baez and Carlo Rovelli have criticised the leading unified theory of gravity and quantum mechanics , string theory , as retaining absolute space.
