NICL currently houses 14,000 m of ice cores collected from Greenland and Antarctica , including the GISP2 , Siple Dome , and portions of the Vostok cores. The facility is also the lead organization for the handling and storage of the upcoming West Antarctic Ice Sheet icecore. In addition to providing a large storage facility, maintained at 35 Celsius C , NICL also has one of the largest sub zero research and sample preparation spaces in the world. NICL is responsible for distributing samples of ice cores in their collection to researchers around the world, following approved research proposals. In addition to research activities, NICL also participates in public outreach and gives 100 tours per year. The icecore cores are cylinders of ice 11 centimeters in diameter that were brought to the surface in 3.5 meter lengths. The NGRIP site was chosen to extract a long and undisturbed record stretching into the last glacial , and it succeeded. The site was chosen for a flat basal topography to avoid the flow distortions that render the bottom of the Greenland icecore project GRIP and Greenland Ice Sheet Project GISP cores unreliable. Unusually, there is melting at the bottom of the NGRIP core believed to be due to a high geothermal geology geothermal heat flux locally. This has the advantage that the bottom layers are less compressed by thinning than they would otherwise be NGRIP annual layers at 105 kyr age are 1.1 cm thick, twice the GRIP thicknesses at equal age. The NGRIP record helps to resolve a problem with the GRIP and GISP2 records the unreliability of the Eemian Stage portion of the record. Unreferenced date December 2009 Refimprove date December 2009 Image pollen core sampling.jpg right thumbnail 200px Pollen cores being taken at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. A pollen core is a core sample of a medium containing a stratigraphy stratigraphic sequence of pollen . Analysis of the type and frequency of the pollen in each layer is used to study changes in climate or land use using regional vegetation as a proxy. This analysis is conceptually comparable to the study of icecore s. Methods Cores are obtained from deposits where pollen is likely to have been trapped. Cores are generally obtained from Lake lacustrine sediments and peat bog s although soil sediments may also be obtained. Degradation of the pollen exine and bioturbation may reduce the quality of the pollen grains and stratigraphy of the core so researchers frequently select locations where the sediments are under Hypoxia environmental anaerobic conditions. The cores are then subjected to pollen analysis by palynologist s who are able to infer the proportions of major plant types from the concentrations of different pollen types found in the cores. Image Corroded Core Plug.JPG thumb right 250px A core plug that has been corroded from improper engine maintenance. Core plugs , sometimes wrongly called freeze plugs or frost plugs , are plug s that fill the core manufacturing core holes found on water cooled internal combustion engine s. The sand casting cores are used to form the internal cavities in the engine block or cylinder head s , usually forming the Engine cooling coolant passage s. The traditional plug is a thin, domed, disc of ferrous metal which is pressed into a machined hole in the casting. Alternatively a non ferrous metal such as brass offers improved corrosion prevention. In some high performance engines the core plugs are large diameter pipe plug s. ref Citation last Monroe first Tom title Engine builder s handbook inspection, machining, reconditioning, valvetrain assembly, blueprinting, degreeing cams, tools, engine assembly page 111 publisher HPBooks year 1996 url http books.google.com books?id p1zb keWM74C&pg PA111 isbn 9781557882455 postscript . ref Core plugs can often be a source of troublesome leaks as a result of internal cooling system corrosion. Refimprove date August 2007 Expert subject Philosophy date November 2008 In philosophy , a core ontology is a basic and minimal ontology consisting only of the minimal concepts required to understand the other concepts. It must be based on a core glossary in some human language so humans can comprehend the concepts and distinctions made. Each natural language tends to rely on its own conceptual metaphor structure, and so tends to have its own core ontology according to W. V. Quine . It could be said also to represent the moral core of a human linguistics linguistic culture , and to self correct so as to better represent core cultural ideas. Such a core ontology is a key pre requisite to a more complete foundation ontology , or a more general philosophical sense of ontology. Most applicable to education teaching , e.g. the Longmans defining dictionary of the simplest meanings of 2,000 English words is used to define the 4,000 most basic English idiom s this is a core glossary of the English language , which permits access to the core ontology the idioms . Unreferenced auto yes date December 2009 Core power is a parameter used in aeroengine performance engineering to enable a comparison of the power capabilities of jet engine e.g. turbofan cores. Although the alternative core size parameter is easier to compute, it only takes into account the basic flow size of the device, no account being taken of the impact of core supercharging or turbine rotor inlet temperature. There are several definitions of core power in use, but the following definition is fairly popular The core of the engine is treated as a turbojet so, for instance, in a simple 2 spool turbofan, the power requirements of the fan bypass section are ignored and LP turbine imagined to be only driving the inner part of the fan. Firstly, a calculation is undertaken to find the turbine exit conditions where sufficient power is being extracted from the turbine system to just drive the core compression system i.e. the fan inner and HP compressor . Using the aforementioned turbine exit conditions as an input, an ideal i.e. 100 efficient turbine expansion down to atmospheric pressure is calculated. The resulting turbine shaft power is called core power . In a turboshaft turboprop , most of the core power is realised as shaft power, whilst in a turbojet the core power is converted into jet power. In a turbofan, some of the core power is transferred to the fan bypass section and then converted into jet power.
