Ichabod Alden August 11, 1739 November 11, 1778 was an American Revolutionary War officer and commanding officer during the Cherry Valley Massacre . The great grandson of the Mayflower pilgrim John Alden , Ichabod Alden was born in Duxbury, Massachusetts . Appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the Plymouth militia regiment in 1775, Alden first saw action serving with the 25th Continental Regiment during the Siege of Boston . Following his promotion to Colonel in November 1776, Alden was assigned to the 7th Massachusetts Regiment stationed at the garrison of Cherry Valley, New York . Although commanding between 200 and 300 men, Alden s limited military experience and lack of knowledge regarding local Indian tactics or customs would prove to be a great disadvantage as in early November 1778, receiving a warning of an attack by local tribes, Alden made minimal preparations. On November 11, a combined force of 600 Indians led by Joseph Brant and 200 Tories known as Butler s Rangers under Major Walter Butler Loyalist Walter Butler launched a Cherry Valley massacre surprise attack after the capture of several of Alden s scouts provided intelligence of the situation in the valley. In the attack 32 civilians and 16 soldiers were killed, and 71 residents were captured. The officers of the regiment were quartered in private homes, and Alden was killed in an attempt to reach the fort from a house on the outskirts of the fort. His executive officer, Lt. Col. William Stacy , was taken prisoner. The attack, retaliation for the defeat at the Battle of Oriskany , would later provoke an Sullivan Expedition expedition against the villages and agricultural crops of the Iroquois League led by Gen. John Sullivan in 1779. References McHenry, Robert. Webster s American Military Biographies , Springfield, Mass. G & C. Merriam Co., 1978. Persondata Metadata see Wikipedia Persondata . Hophni Hebrew Name Hofni op n and Phinehas or Phineas Hebrew Name Pinehas P n s were the two sons of Eli Biblical priest Eli . The Books of Samuel describe them as the officiating priests at the sanctuary of Shiloh Biblical city Shiloh at the time of Hannah Bible Hannah . In the Biblical narrative, Hophni and Phinehas are criticised for engaging in illicit behaviour, such as appropriating the best portion of sacrifices for themselves, and having sexual intercourse sexual relations with the sanctuary s serving women. They are described as sons of Belial 1 Samuel 2 12, wicked men in the NIV . Their misdeeds provoked the indignation of Yahweh and lead to a divine curse being put on them, and they subsequently both died on the same day, during a battle against the Philistines at Eben ezer . On hearing of his death, and of the Philistine captivity of the Ark capture of the ark , Phinehas wife gave birth to a son that she named Ichabod , and then she herself died. According to Flavius Josephus Antiquities 3.354 , Phineas officiated as high priest, because Eli had resigned as high priest because of his advanced age. In the Talmud , some commentators argue that Phinehas was innocent of the crimes ascribed to him, and that Hophni alone committed them, though Jonathan ben Uzziel declares that neither was wicked, and that this part of the Biblical narrative, in which the crimes are imputed to them, should be regarded as having a figurative meaning. According to another part of the Books of Samuel, Ichabod had a brother, Ahitub . That he is referred to as Ichabod s brother, rather than as another son of Phinehas, is considered by biblical scholars to suggest that Ichabod, barely mentioned in the Bible, was actually an important figure. ref Jewish Encyclopedia, Ichabod ref References references JewishEncyclopedia eastons DEFAULTSORT Hophni And Phinehas Category Hebrew Bible people Category Books of Samuel Tanakh stub pl Chofni i Pinchas ... more details

History of the House 440 acres of land were originally purchased by Ichabod Benton Miller on April 2, 1796 and construction of the house was started soon after. Ichabod purchased the land from Captain Matthew Jouitt, a Virginia officer who was granted 600 acres of land for his services in the Revolutionary War. Ichabod purchased the land for .50 an acre a total of 220. When the house was built, it was built like any house of that time period. The house s front window is original. People lived in the house for 170 years after the Millers left. The last owners of the house was Lawrence and Emma Leuser. They owned the house from 1910 1969. The brick house next to the Miller Leuser house was owned by Lawerence and Emma s daughters. While the daughters lived in the new house, equipped with all the new tools of the era, Mr. Leuser still lived in the log cabin in order to rock in his rocker. ATHS bought the house in 1971, and now the house resides on less than an acre.
