  1. Imaginary element

In mathematical model theory , an imaginary element of a structure is roughly a definable equivalence class. These were introduced by harvtxt Shelah 1990 , and elimination of imaginaries was introduced by harvtxt Poizat 1983 Definitions M is a model of some theory. x and y stand for n tuples of variables, for some natural number n . An equivalence formula is a formula x , y that is a symmetric and transitive relation. Its domain is the set of elements a of M sup n sup such that a , a it is an equivalence relation on its domain. An imaginary element a of M is an equivalence formula together with an equivalence class a . M has elimination of imaginaries if for every imaginary element a there is a formula x , y such that there is a unique tuple b so that the equivalence class of a consists of the tuples x such that x , b A model has uniform elimination of imaginaries if the formula can be chosen independently of a . A theory has elimination of imaginaries if every model does and similarly for uniform elimination . Examples ZFC set theory has elimination of imaginaries. Peano arithmetic has uniform elimination of imaginaries. A vector space of dimension at least 2 over a finite field with at least 3 elements does not have elimination of imaginaries. 1. Imaginary Conversations

Imaginary Conversations is six volumes of imaginary conversations between personalities of classical Greece and Rome poets and authors statesmen and women and fortunate and unfortunate individuals, written by the English poet and author Walter Savage Landor . Background The Imaginary Conversations were begun when Landor, aged 46, had settled down with his family at Florence in 1821 where he had rooms in the Medici Palace and later rented the Villa Castigilione. The roots of the compositions lay in his childhood as he wrote later When I was younger.. a mong the chief pleasures of my life, and among the commonest of my occupations was the bringing before me such heroes and heroines of antiquity, such poets and sages, such of the prosperous and unfortunate as most interested me and e ngaging them in conversations best suited to their characters . ref H Van Thal Landor a biographical anthology 1973 ref The unenthusiastic reception of Count Julian demonstrated that Landor, while adept at dialogue, lacked the dramatic capability necessary to convert these to the stage and he destroyed another tragedy Ferranti and Giulio in frustration at his publishers. The Imaginary Conversations therefore provided a different vehicle for Landor s art. At Florence, Landor was corresponding with Robert Southey Southey who had planned to write a book of Colloquies and they considered collaborating on a project. Landor had finished fifteen dialogues by 9 March 1822, and sent them to Longman s. Longmans .... In 1824, two volumes were published with eighteen conversations in each. 1. Imaginary voyage

Imaginary voyage is a kind of narrative in which utopia n or satire satirical representation or some popular science content is put into a fictional frame of travel account. History It is very archaic narrative technique preceding Romanticism romance and novel istic forms. Two known examples from Greek literature are Euhemerus Sacred History and Iambulus Islands of the Sun . Their utopian islands are apparently modeled from mythological Fortunate Isles . Lucian s True History parodizes the whole genre of imaginary voyage, and in his foreword Lucian cites Iambulus as one of objects of parody. Photios I of Constantinople Photius states though in his Bibliotheca Photius Bibliotheca that its main object was Antonius Diogenes The incredible wonders beyond Thule , a genre blending of fantastic voyage and Greek romance which popularized Pythagoreanism Pythagorean teachings. The first to revive this form in the Modern era was Thomas More in his Utopia book Utopia 1515 , to be followed a century later by proliferation of utopian islands Johannes Valentinus Andreae s Reipublicae Christianopolitanae descriptio 1619 , Tommaso Campanella s The City of the Sun 1623 , Francis Bacon s New Atlantis 1627 , Jacob Bidermann s Utopia 1640 , Denis Veiras The history of the Sevarambi 1675 , Gabriel de Foigny s La Terre australe connue 1676 , Gabriel Daniel s Voyage du monde de Descartes 1690 , Fran ois Lefebvre s Relation du voyage de l isle d Eutopie 1711 , as well as many others. Lucian s satirical line was exploited by Fran ois Rabelais Gargantua and Pantagruel 1532 and developed later on in Joseph Hall bishop Joseph Hall s Mundus alter et idem 1607 , Fran ois H delin s Histoire du temps 1654 , Cyrano de Bergerac writer Cyrano de Bergerac s Histoire comique contenant les tats et Empires de ...
