Unreferenced date December 2009 Nashoba County was a political subdivision of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Choctaw Nation in the Indian Territory . The county formed part of the nation s Apukshunnubbee District , or Second District, one of three administrative super regions. Nashoba County was established by the Choctaw Nation s Doaksville Constitution of 1860. It ceased to exist on November 16, 1907, along with the Choctaw Nation and the Indian Territory, upon the advent of Oklahoma s statehood. The territory comprising the former county is now included in the Oklahoma counties of Le Flore, McCurtain and Pushmataha. Nashoba is the word for wolf in the Choctaw language , and the county was often referred to as Wolf County. Its county seat was Nashoba Court House. Bordering Nashoba County on its east was the State of Arkansas. To its west was Cedar County, Choctaw Nation Cedar County , and to its north was Wade County. To the south were Bok Tuklo and Eagle counties. Mayhew, IndianTerritory , located two miles north of present day Boswell, Oklahoma , was the seat of government of the Pushmataha District of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Choctaw Nation , in the IndianTerritory . It was located in Jackson County, Choctaw Nation , the county seat of which was Pigeon Roost, south of present day Boswell. It ceased its functions upon preparation for Oklahoma s statehood in 1907, when the Choctaw Nation s government and political subdivisions were dissolved. History Mayhew was founded in 1836 by Presbyterian missionaries to the Choctaw Indians . They named it for Mayhew Presbyterian Mission in Mississippi. ref George H. A United States Post Office was established at Mayhew, IndianTerritory on February 5, 1845 and operated until September 30, 1902. Anthony Wayne Mad Anthony Wayne , it was intended as a link in the great line of forts protecting the American West . The army abandoned the fort in 1842 due to the high incidence of malaria suffered by soldiers assigned there, and turned it over to the Cherokee Nation. At the beginning of the American Civil War Civil War , Stand Watie took over the fort and organized the Cherokee Mounted Rifles. The Union met the Confederates near here in 1862 for the Battle of Old Fort Wayne . The old fort was located in present day Adair County, Oklahoma Adair County , near U.S. Hwy 59 just north of Watts, Oklahoma . An Oklahoma State Historical site marker can be seen alongside the highway. The marker was placed in the 1970s at the request of area residents. Up until this time most residents had no idea the fort had ever existed. Nothing remains of the fort and exact location is not known. The Butterfield Overland Mail in IndianTerritory was part of the overall Butterfield Overland Mail service 1857 1861 created by Congress March 3, 1857. The route crossed IndianTerritory from Colbert s Ferry to Fort Smith, Arkansas which was the Center for the Overland Mail s 7th Division. Fort Smith was also the junction point of the south bound coaches with the Memphis mail and its passengers. From Fort Smith the 7th Division route crossed the Poteau River into IndianTerritory into the Choctaw Nation at Skullyville, Oklahoma Skullyville and left the Chickasaw Nation at Colbert s Ferry into Texas. There were 12 stage stations in IndianTerritory, located from 13 to convert 19 mi km apart. The total length of the route across the territory was approximately convert 197 mi km . The Butterfield route met with the Texas Road near Geary s Station and followed it southward to the Red River. Although it lasted only from 1857 to 1861, the Butterfield route made famous one of the most important roads in the settlement and development of early Oklahoma and was used until shortly before statehood in 1907.
