  1. James of Metz

Very little is known about the life and times of James of Metz . It is a mystery when he was born and when he died, but what is known is that he was philosophically active in the first decade of the fourteenth century. Of his works that survive presently, much of it remains unedited, and only a dozen manuscript copies still exist. ref Gracia, Jorge J.E., and Timothy B. Noone. A Companion to Philosophy in the Middle Ages. Malden Blackwell, 2003. 249 251. ref James was known as a Dominican Theologian, which meant following the teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas . However, James earned the reputation for being a critical Thomist, ref Irribarren, Isabel. Henry of Ghent s Teaching on Modes and its Influence in the Fourteenth Century. Mediaeval Studies. 64. Toronto Pontificial Institute of Mediaeval Studies, 2002. Print. ref as he openly disagreed some of Aquinas s positions. One account of James describes him as an eclectic thinker, and that his works were partially influenced by Peter of Auvergne as well as Henry of Ghent . ref Gracia, Jorge J.E., and Timothy B. Noone. A Companion to Philosophy in the Middle Ages. Malden Blackwell, 2003. 249 251. ref Philosophical The only philosophical work of James s that is known for certain is that he gave two lectures on Peter Lombard s Sentences . ref Pasnau, Robert. The Cambridge History of Medieval Philosophy. Cambridge Cambridge University Press, 2010. 899. Print. ref Presumably, these lectures occurred at the University of Paris, roughly from 1300 1306. An instance in which James did not see eye to eye with Aquinas was in regard to the way Aquinas described individuation by matter. Aquinas held the view that that matter is the principle of individuation. James, on the other hand, believed that form is the principle of individuation. ref Gracia, Jorge J.E., and Timothy B. Noone. 1. Graph of desire

The graph of desire is a conceptual tool from the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan . History Lacan devised numerous quasi mathematical diagrams to represent the structure of the unconscious and its points of contact with empirical and mental reality. He adapted figures from the field of topology in order to represent the Freudian view of the mind as embodying a double inscription which could be defined as the ultimate inseparability of unconscious motivations from conscious ones . Graph The graph of desire was first proposed in a 1960 colloquium, and was later published in the Ecrits . It depends on ideas developed originally in Lacan s Schema R , a graph in which fundamental organising structures of the human mind are shown in a schematic relationship to the domains or orders which in turn structure human reality the Imaginary, the Symbolic and the Real. The graph of desire is a flattened representation of a signifying chain as it crosses a pathway Lacan called a vector geometric vector of desire. It appears as two curved lines which cross one another at two separate points. Each line has a symbolic meaning. Image with unknown copyright status removed Image Graph of desire.gif thumb The graph of desire Elements of the graph The signifying chain begins in a linguistic sign S and progresses to a signification S , or a linguistic meaning . It can be expressed sententially and has a duration. The vector of desire is a representation of the volition and will of the split or barred subject . Unlike the signifying chain, the vector of desire is expressed metaphorically, and has no duration. It is necessary to bear in mind the special conception of the subject Lacan means by the symbol. The barred subject is the internally conflicted result of the processes of individuation that begin in infancy. In Lacan s account of individuation, the infant must respond to the loss of symbiosis with the mother by creating a symbol of this lack. In doing so the infant is constraine ...   more details

One is unconscious wholeness two is the conflict of opposites three points to a potential resolution the third is the transcendent function, described as a psychic function that arises from the tension between consciousness and the unconscious and supports their union ref Sharp, p.135 ref and the one as the fourth is a transformed state of consciousness, relatively whole and at peace. Jung speaks of the axiom of Maria as running in various forms through the whole of alchemy like a leitmotiv. In The Psychology of the Transference he writes of the fourfold nature of the transforming process using the language of Greek alchemy It begins with the four separate elements, the state of chaos, and ascends by degrees to the three manifestations of Mercurius ref Haeffner, p. 173 ref in the inorganic, organic, and spiritual worlds and, after attaining the form of Sol and Luna i.e., the precious metal gold and silver, but also the radiance of the gods who can overcome the strife of the elements by love , it culminates in the one and indivisible incorruptible, ethereal, eternal nature of the anima , the quinta essentia , aqua permanens , tincture, or lapis philosophorum . 1. Repetition blindness

Repetition Blindness RB is a phenomenon observed in Rapid Serial Visual Presentation . Subjects are less likely to detect the repetition of a target stimulus physiology stimulus than they are to detect a second, different target. For example, a subject s chances of correctly reporting both appearances of the word cat in the RSVP stream dog mouse cat elephant cat snake are lower than their chances of reporting the third and fifth words in the stream dog mouse cat elephant pig snake . The precise mechanism underlying RB has been extensively debated. Nancy Kanwisher has argued that it involves failure to tokenize the second appearance of a repeated stimulus, leading to the second appearance being dropped from short term memory before it can be reported. However, Whittlesea and colleagues have argued that repetition blindness arises from a failure to properly reconstruct the list, both online and post list. This failure to properly reconstruct the list arises from the poor encoding cues that are the result of the RSVP task. See also Attentional blink Semantic satiation References Kanwisher, N.G. 1987 .
