Unreferenced date April 2007 The interest sensitivity gap was one of the first techniques used in asset liability management to manage interest rate risk . The use of this technique was initiated in the middle 1970s in the United States when rising interest rates in 1975 1976 and again from 1979 onward triggered a banking crisis that later resulted in more than 1 trillion in losses when the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation were forced to liquidate hundreds of failed institutions who had typically lent for long maturities at fixed interest rates such as 30 year fixed rate mortgage s and borrowed for much shorter maturities. The interest rate sensitivity gap classifies all assets, liabilities and off balance sheet transactions by effective maturity from an interest rate reset perspective. A thirty year fixed rate mortgage would be classified as a 30 year instrument. A 15 year mortgage with a rate fixed only for the first year would be classified as a one year instrument. The interest rate sensitivity gap compares the amount of assets and liabilities in each time period in the interest rate sensitivity gap table. This comparison gives an approximate view of the interest rate risk of the balance sheet being analyzed. The interest rate sensitivity gap is much less accurate than modern interest rate risk management technology where the impact of a change in the yield curve can be analyzed using the Heath Jarrow Morton framework based on the work of researchers such as John C. Hull John Hull , Alan White, Robert C. Merton , Robert A. Jarrow and many others. Category Interest Sensitivity gap ... more details
Unreferenced date December 2009 High Sensitivity Global Positioning System GPS receivers use large banks of correlators and digital signal processing to search for GPS signals very quickly. This results in very fast time to first fix times to first fix when the signals are at their normal levels, for example outdoors. When GPS signals are weak, for example indoors, the extra processing power can be used to integrate weak signals to the point where they can be used to provide a position or timing solution. GPS signals are already very weak when they arrive at the Earth s surface. The GPS satellite s have transmitter s that only deliver 27  W from a distance of 20,200  km in orbit above the Earth. By the time the signals arrive at the user s receiver, they are typically as weak as 160 dBW , equivalent to one tenth of a millionth billionth of a watt. This is well below the thermal noise level in its bandwidth. Outdoors, GPS signals are typically around the 155 dBW level. Conventional GPS receivers integrate the received GPS signals for the same amount of time as the duration of a complete Global Positioning System Navigation signals C A code cycle which is 1 ms. This results in the ability to acquire and track signals down to around the 160 dBW level. High Sensitivity GPS receivers are able to integrate the incoming signals for up to 1,000 times longer than this and therefore acquire signals up to 1,000 times weaker. Bode s sensitivity integral , discovered by Hendrik Wade Bode , is a formula that quantifies some of the limitations in feedback control of linear parameter invariant systems. Moisture Sensitivity Level relates to the packaging and handling precautions for some semiconductors. The MSL is an Electronics electronic standard for the time period in which a moisture sensitive device can be exposed to ambient room conditions approximately 30 C 60 RH . Increasingly, semiconductors have been manufactured in smaller sizes. Components such as thin fine pitch devices and ball grid array s could be damaged during Surface mount technology SMT reflow when moisture trapped inside the component expands. The expansion of trapped moisture can result in internal separation delamination of the plastic from the die or lead frame, wire bond damage, die damage, and internal cracks. Most of this damage is not visible on the component surface. In extreme cases, cracks will extend to the component surface. In the most severe cases, the component will bulge and pop. This is known as the popcorn effect. IPC electronics IPC Association Connecting Electronic Industries created and released IPC M 109, Moisture sensitive Component Standards and Guideline Manual. Moisture sensitive devices are packaged in a moisture barrier antistatic bag with a desiccant and a moisture indicator card which is sealed. IPC M 109 includes seven documents. Tire load sensitivity describes the behaviour of tire s under load. Conventional pneumatic tires do not behave as Friction Laws of dry friction classical friction theory would suggest. The load sensitivity of most real tires in their typical operating range is such that the coefficient of friction decreases as the vertical load, Fz, increases. Coulomb friction theory says that the maximum horizontal force developed should be proportional to the vertical load on the tire. In practice, the maximum horizontal force Fy that can be generated is proportional, roughly, to the vertical load Fz raised to the power of somewhere between 0.7 and 0.9, typically. Production car tires typically develop this maximum lateral force, or cornering force , at a slip angle of 6 10 degrees, although this angle increases as the vertical load on the tire increases. ref Milliken, W.F., Milliken, D.L., 1995, Race Car Vehicle Dynamics , Society of Automotive Engineers SAE Warrendale, PA. page 27. ref Formula 1 car tires may reach a peak sideforce at 3 degrees ref Wright P., 2001, Formula 1 Technology , Society of Automotive Engineers SAE Warrendale, PA. ref Example As an example, here is data extracted from Milliken and Milliken s Race Car Vehicle Dynamics , figure 2.9 Vertical load Fy Fz Slip Angle lbf max degrees 900 1.10 5.6 1350 1.08 6.0 1800 0.97 6.7 The same sensitivity is typically seen in the longitudinal forces, and combined lateral and longitudinal slip. The Price Sensitivity Meter PSM is a market technique for determining consumer price preferences. It was introduced in 1976 by Dutch economist Peter van Westendorp . The technique has been used by a wide variety of researchers in the market research industry. The PSM approach was a staple technique for addressing pricing issues for the past 20 years. It historically has been promoted by many professional market research associations in their training and professional development programs. The PSM approach continues to be used widely throughout the market research industry and descriptions can be easily found in many market research websites. Assumptions The assumption underlying PSM is that respondents are capable of envisioning a pricing landscape and that price is an intrinsic measure of value or utility . Participants in a PSM exercise are asked to identify price points at which they can infer a particular value to the product or service under study. PSM claims to capture the extent to which a product has an inherent value denoted by price. Approach The traditional PSM approach asks four price related questions, which are then evaluated as a series of four cumulative distributions, one distribution for each question. The standard question formats can vary, but generally take the following form blockquote At what price would you consider the product to be so expensive that you would not consider buying it? Too expensive At what price would you consider the product to be priced so low that you would feel the quality couldn t be very good?
