Unreferenced date August 2009 Yankee ingenuity is an American English reference to the self reliance of early colonial settlers of New England , United States . It describes an attitude of make do with materials on hand. It is inventive improvisation, adaptation and overcoming of dire straits when faced with a dearth of materials. Yankee Ingenuity was often necessary for New England colonists. Unlike the rich and fertile soil of Virginia, New England had poor soil as well as a harsh winter and had to rely on improvisation for economic success. Agricultural techniques learned from the Wampanoags such as fertilizing fallow fields with rotting menhaden to enrich the soil helped the colonists to overcome such setbacks. Similar phrases relating to other former colonial outposts exist in other parts of the world, such as Culture of New Zealand Kiwi ingenuity , referring to a similar situation in New Zealand . An example of Yankee ingenuity would be using a device, such as a pole saw, to cut brush, in the absence of a more appropriate tool. Perdix was a nephew and student of Daedalus as well as the grandson of Athena in Greek mythology . In other sources, Perdix is the father of Talos inventor Talos , who was nephew and student of Daedalus. Mythology Daedalus was so proud of his achievements that he could not bear the idea of a rival. His sister, sometimes named as Perdix, had placed her son variously named Perdix, Talos, or Calos under his charge to be taught the mechanical arts. He was an apt scholar and showed striking evidence of ingenuity. Walking on the seashore, he picked up the spine of a fish, or a serpent s jaw. Imitating it, he took a piece of iron and notched it on the edge, and thus invented the saw. He put two pieces of iron together, connecting them at one end with a rivet, and sharpening the other ends, and made a pair of compasses. Daedalus was so envious of his nephew s accomplishments that he took an opportunity, when they were together one day on the top of a high tower, to push him off. But Athena , who favors ingenuity, saw him falling and arrested his fate by changing him into a bird called after his name, the Perdix partridge . This bird does not build its nest in the trees, nor take lofty flights, but nestles in the hedges, and mindful of his fall, avoids high places. For this crime, Daedalus was tried and banished. Athena branded him with a partridge so he will never forget his obscene crime. References in popular culture Perdix appears briefly in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series in the fourth book, The Battle of the Labyrinth , Perdix is killed by Daedalus when the inventor lets him fall off a cliff upon one of the choices given to Daedalus by Janus . Perdix dies, and Athena gives Daedelus the mark of a murderer. Perdix s spirit is in the Underworld as mentioned that when Daedalus finally dies and is made architect of the Underworld, he is allowed to visit Icarus and Perdix on weekends.
