Wikify date May 2010 Input enhancement is a concept in second language acquisition , coined by Mike Sharwood Smith , that is commonly used to signal methods that an instructor uses to make selected features of a second language more salient for learners in such a way as to facilitate acquisition Sharwood Smith 1991, 1993 . It may be contrasted with similar but not identical to concepts such as motherese or teacher talk where the main aim is to make the language comprehensible and where acquisition is not necessarily intended or is at least not the primary motive. It includes, but is not limited to a number of techniques such as avoiding vowel reduction typical of rapid or casual speech in some languages, simply slowing down the rate of speech, using exaggerated stress and intonation, more repetition of words and phrases, less pre verbal modification and more post verbal modification, use of gestures, visual enhancment in written text such as boldface and underlining, and the use of video. It also includes explicit, more traditional techniques drawing the learner s attention more overtly to how the language system works by discussing particular aspects of grammar and usage. Sharwood Smith distinguishes between external input enhancement , as illustrated above, and internal input enhancement where particular aspects of the target language become salient at a given stage simply as a result of some natural developmental process outside the learner s control and not because of outside intervention. Input enhancement was a term designed to replace the term grammatical consciousness raising CR Sharwood Smith 1981, Rutherford and Sharwood Smith 1985 since the newer term did not necessarily imply that any changes in the mind of the learner would necessarily result from any changes ... The input Electrical impedance impedance of an electrical network is the equivalent electrical impedance impedance seen by a power source connected to that network. If the source provides known voltage and current, such impedance can be calculated using Ohm s Law . The input impedance is the Th venin s theorem Th venin s equivalent circuit of the electrical network, modeled by an RL resistor inductor or an RC resistor capacitor combination, with equivalent values that would result in the same response as that of the network. It is also called Z11 in terms of Z parameters . Generally speaking, the exact definition depends on the particular field of study. Image Source and load circuit Z.png frame Simple source and load circuit Z sub S sub is the output impedance seen by the load, and Z sub L sub is the input impedance seen by the source . Termination requirements Audio systems Generally in sound reproduction audio and High fidelity hi fi systems , amplifiers have an input impedance several orders of magnitude higher than the output impedance of the source device connected to that input. This concept is also called voltage bridging or impedance bridging . In this case, Z sub load sub , or the input of the driven stage Z sub source sub , or the output of the driving stage. In general, this configuration will be more resistant to noise particularly power line Hum sound hum . Also the loading effects on the driving amplifier stage are reduced. The CKC Chinese Input System is a Chinese input methods for computers Chinese inputmethod for computers that uses the four corner method to encode characters. The encoding uses a maximum of 4 digits 0 9 to represent a Chinese character . All possible shapes of strokes that forms any given Chinese character are classified into 10 groups, each represented by one of the ten possible digits 0 9. Chinese characters can then be input by following the order in which the strokes are identified at the 4 corners of the character. As a result of this simplicity in coding using the ten numeric digits, users typically need to use only a numeric keypad to input Chinese. Implementations for both Traditional and Simplified Chinese are available though the coding principle applies to both. The Wubihua method lang zh CN is a Chinese input methods for computers Chinese inputmethod for writing text on a computer. It is based on the stroke order of a word, and can be input using only a numerical keypad. Although it is possible to input Traditional Chinese characters with this method, this method is often associated with Simplified Chinese characters . The Wubihua method should not be confused with the Wubi method . Each of the five keys from 1 to 5 are assigned a certain type of stroke resembling the Eight Principles of Yong 1 for horizontal strokes , 2 for vertical strokes , 3 for downwards right to left strokes , 4 for dot strokes or downwards left to right strokes , and 5 for all other strokes marked . To input any character, simply press the keys corresponding to the first four strokes of a character and the key corresponding to the last stroke of a character. For characters four strokes or less, press 0 after the last stroke. Wubihua is one of the easiest to learn methods because it is simple and does not require knowledge of pronunciation or Pinyin . However, it tends to be vague a Wubihua code will normally match tens or hundreds of characters , and each character has a unique code thus, characters whose stroke order are frequently transposed due to a person s writing style cannot easily be found . Whereas Microsoft s DirectSound is commonly used as an intermediary signal path for non professional users, ASIO allows musician s and sound engineer s to access external hardware directly. Overview ASIO bypasses the normal audio path from a user application through layers of intermediary Windows operating system software so that an application connects directly to the sound card hardware. Each layer that is bypassed means a reduction in latency the delay between an application sending audio information and it being reproduced by the sound card, or input signals from the sound card being available to the application . In this way ASIO offers a relatively simple way of accessing multiple audio inputs and outputs independently. Unreferenced date December 2006 Programmed input output PIO is a method of transferring data between the Central processing unit CPU and a peripheral such as a network adapter or an AT Attachment ATA storage device. In general, programmed I O happens when software running on the CPU uses instructions that access I O address space to perform data transfers to or from an I O device. This is contrast to Direct Memory Access DMA transfers. The best known example of a PC device that uses programmed I O is the AT Attachment ATA interface however, this interface can also be operated in any of several Direct Memory Access DMA modes. Many older devices in a PC also use PIO, including legacy serial ports, legacy parallel ports when not in ECP mode, the PS 2 keyboard and mouse ports, legacy MIDI and joystick ports, the interval timer, and older network interfaces. PIO mode in the ATA interface Until the introduction of Direct memory access DMA , PIO was the only available method. The PIO interface is grouped into different modes that correspond to different transfer rate s. The electrical signal ing among the different modes is similar only the cycle time between transactions is reduced in order to achieve a higher transfer rate. All ATA devices support the slowest mode Mode 0. By accessing the information registers using Mode 0 on an ATA drive, the CPU is able to determine the maximum transfer rate for the device and configure the ATA controller for optimal performance. The PIO modes require a great deal of CPU overhead to configure a data transaction and transfer the data. Electoral systems Dodgson s method is a voting system proposed by the author, mathematician and logician, Charles Dodgson better known as Lewis Carroll . The method is extending the Condorcet method by swapping candidates until you find a Condorcet winner. The winner is the candidate which requires the minimum number of swaps. Dodgson proposed this voting scheme in his 1876 work A method of taking votes on more than two issues . Given an integer k and an election, it is NP complete to determine whether or not a candidate can become a Condorcet winner with less than k swaps. Description In Dodgson s method, each voter submits an ordered list of all candidates according to their own preference from best to worst . The winner is defined to be the candidate for whom we need to perform the minimum number of pairwise swaps added over all candidates before they become a Condorcet winner . In particular, if there is already a Condorcet winner , they win the election. In short, we must find the voting profile with minimum Kendall tau distance from the input, such that it has a Condorcet winner they are declared the victor. Computing the winner is an NP hard problem. ref name btt J. Bartholdi III, C. A. Tovey, and M. A.
