  1. Insect ecology

Insect ecology is the scientific study of how insect s , individually or as a community, interact with the surrounding Natural environment environment or ecosystem . ref name InsectEcology cite book title Insect ecology an ecosystem approach last Schowalter first Timothy Duane edition 2 illustrated year 2006 publisher Academic Press isbn 9780120887729 page pages 572 url http books.google.co.in books?id 3PD6R AEvwEC accessdate 17 July 2010 ref rp 3 Insects play significant roles in the ecology of the world due to their vast diversity of form, function and life style their considerable biomass and their interaction with plant life, other organisms and the environment. Since they are the major contributor to biodiversity in the majority of habitats, except in the sea, they accordingly play a variety of extremely important ecological roles in the many functions of an eco system. Taking the case of nutrient recycling insects contribute to this vital function by degrading or consuming leaf litter , wood , carrion and feces dung and by dispersal of fungi . Insects form an important part of the food chain , especially for entomophagy entomophagous vertebrate s such as many mammal s, bird s, amphibian s and reptile s. Insects play an important role in maintaining community structure and composition in the case of animals by transmission of disease s, predation and parasitism , and in the case of plants, through phytophagy and by plant propagation through pollination and seed dispersal . ref cite book title The insects an outline of entomology last1 Gullan first1 P.J. last2 Cranston first2 P.S. year 2005 publisher Wiley Blackwell location edition 3 illustrated, revised isbn 9781405111133 ... unreferenced date April 2012 The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology icipe is an international scientific research institute, headquartered in Nairobi , Kenya which works towards improving lives and livelihoods of people in Africa. icipe was founded in 1970 by a renowned Kenyan entomologist, Thomas Odhiambo , with strong encouragement from Carl Djerassi , a professor of Chemistry at Stanford University . The center s main objective is to research and develop alternative and environmentally friendly pest organism pest and vector management strategies, that are effective, selective, non polluting, non resistance inducing, and which are affordable to resource limited rural and urban communities. icipe s mandate further extends to the conservation and utilization of the rich insect biodiversity found in Africa . Today, icipe is the only international center in sub Saharan Africa working primarily on arthropod s. icipe focuses on sustainable development using human health as the bases, and the environment as the foundation for sustainability. icipe works in a holisitic and integrated approach through a 4 H paradigm Human, Animal, Plant and Environmental Health, with the aim of improving the overall health of communities in tropical Africa by addressing the interlinked problems of poverty, poor health, low agricultural productivity and degradation of the environment. 1. Ecology (disciplines)

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Ecology is a broad biological science and can be divided into many sub disciplines using various criteria. Many of these fields overlap, complement and inform each other. Indeed, few of these disciplines exist in isolation. For example, the population ecology of an organism is a consequence of its behavioral ecology and intimately tied to its community ecology . Methods from molecular ecology might inform the study of the population, and all kinds of data are modeled and analyzed using quantitative ecology techniques. When discussing the study of a single species, a distinction is usually made between its biology and its ecology . For example, polar bear biology might include the study of the polar bear s physiology , morphology biology morphology , pathology and ontogeny , whereas polar bear ecology would include a study of its prey species, its population and metapopulation status, distribution, dependence on environmental conditions, etc. In that sense, there can be as many subdisciplines of ecology as there are species to study. Other criteria Ecology can also be classified on the basis of the primary kinds of organism under study, e.g. animal ecology , plant ecology , insect ecology the biomes principally studied, e.g. forest ecology , grassland ecology , desert ecology , benthic ecology , marine ecology , urban ecology the geographic or climatic area, e.g. arctic ecology , tropical ecology the spatial scale under consideration, e.g. macroecology , landscape ecology the philosophical approach, e.g. systems ecology which adopts a holistic approach the methods used, e.g. molecular ecology . 1. Insect Civilization

Multiple issues notability September 2010 unreferenced December 2009 in universe October 2009 In the science fiction television series Lexx , the Insect Civilization is an ancient race of massive millipede like organisms bent on destroying the Brunnen G and all of human race Humanity . The Early War The Insect Civilization s first forays into the Brunnen G war are sketchy at best, but it seems as though through this war, they gained an instinctive hate for humans in general and the Brunnen G in particular. The war lasted for many years, and the Insects renowned cunning was not enough. Although it is never clear exactly how the Brunnen G actually defeated the Insects, when faced with the task of destroying Mantrid , Kai LEXX Kai remarked that the Brunnen G were able to defeat the insects because they were methodical, and therefore predictable. Insect Reproduction Although the exact means of Insect reproduction is never made clear in the series, the Giga Shadow the last surviving member of the Insect Civilisation had many young attached to its body, despite having no mate. This could mean that Insects either reproduce asexually, are self fertilised, or the Gigashadow was inseminated by artificial means. Do They Die? Insects are capable of surviving beyond the death of their bodies. Insects possess a special transference organ that allow them to transfer their essence into a suitable host. These hosts are usually their offspring. This act of mental parasitism is common to all Insects, but as most Insects were destroyed, leaving them with a dearth of young to inherit their consciousnesses, their defeat in the Great Insect War was assured. The last surviving Insect was desperate enough to avoid this problem by transferring its essence into a succession of human hosts while its body recovered its strength.
