  1. Insect Habitat

The Insect Habitat was a science payload intended for the International Space Station as part of the Space Station Biological Research Program SSBRP . The insect research element of the program was managed by the Canadian Space Agency , and the prime contractor for the Insect Habitat was Routes AstroEngineering , of Ottawa, Ontario. The habitat would have housed six separate colonies of Drosophila fruit flies . Each of these was divided into two compartments, separated by a rotating food cartridge. Fruit flies, which have a short life cycle, tend to lay their eggs in their food supply, to provide their offspring with a source of nourishment after hatching. After the eggs were laid, the food cartridge would be rotated, segregating the generations of flies so they could be studied separately. Multigenerartional studies were possible in this way, if each generation was removed from the colony before its offspring s eggs were ready to be segregated. The Insect Habitat was unique among those in the SSBRP in that it contained its own centrifuge to simulate gravity for the flies, and did not require use of the full size centrifuge to be provided on station. The project was put on hold when Space Shuttle flights were interrupted after the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster destruction of Orbiter Columbia in February 2003. 1. Insect trap

Image InsectTrap.JPG thumb right A sticky insect trap used to monitor pest populations Insect traps are used to monitor or directly reduce insect populations. They typically use food, visual lures, chemical attractants and pheromone s as bait and are installed so that they do not injure other animals or humans or result in residues in foods or feeds. Visual lures use light, bright colors and shapes to attract pest animal pests . Chemical attractants or pheromones may attract only a specific sex. Insect traps are sometimes used in pest management programs instead of pesticides but are more often used to look at seasonal and distributional patterns of pest occurrence. This information may then be used in other pest management approaches. The trap mechanism or bait can vary widely. Light traps with ultraviolet attract certain insects. Designs differ according to the behaviour of the insects being studied. Grasshoppers and some beetles are attracted to lights at a long range but are repelled by it at short range. Farrow s light trap has a large base so that it captures insects that may otherwise fly away from regular light traps. ref Farrow, R. Specialisation has mostly been for piercing and sucking, although a range of specialisations exist, as these modes of feeding have evolved a number of times for example, mosquito es which are fly flies and aphid s which are Hemiptera true bugs both pierce and suck , however female mosquitoes feed on animal blood whereas aphids feed on plant fluids. In this page, the individual mouthparts are introduced for chewing insects. Specialisations are generally described thereafter.
