No Party Affiliation or NPA is a term used to apply to those vote rs or politicians who do not hold an affiliation with any particular political party . Another term which is often used in place of NPA is Independent voter Independent . In the U.S. state of Michigan for example, the term Independent voter Independent is not used by the Secretary of State of Michigan because it could be interpreted as a party affiliation Citation needed date May 2010 . Likewise, when Ross Perot s Reform Party of the United States of America Reform Party initially organized as the Independence Party , the name was rejected because the Secretary of State decided that the name would be misleading to voters who may mistake it for the concept of No Party Affiliation . Institutional ethnography IE is a sociological method of inquiry. IE was created to explore the social relations that structure people s everyday lives. For the institutional ethnographer, ordinary daily activity becomes the site for an investigation of social organization. IE was first developed by Dorothy E. Institutional Cruelty is a model developed by Philip Hallie , who believes ethics are rooted in passion and common sense rather than in technical science. Halle defines institutional cruelty as a persistent pattern of humiliation that endures for years in a community, but the victimizer and the victim find ways to downplay the harm that is being done. Both the victim and the victimizer justify cruel actions based on what they have been led to believe is actual inferiority. Halle argues that cruelty is created by an imbalance of power, or hierarchy. According to his view, the opposite of institutionalized cruelty is freedom from the cruel relationship, not just kindness. Institutional cruelty demotes individuality. Commitment to an institution that overrides all sentimentality transforms cruelty and destruction into moral nobility, and commitment is the lifeblood of an institution, Halle From Cruelty to Goodness 7 philo stub Category Ethics Category Philosophical concepts Category Social philosophy ... more details

Institutional pedagogy is a practice of education that is centered on two factors 1. the complexity of the learner, and the Unconscious mind unconscious that he or she brings to the classroom. This unconscious is another name for the diversity of social, economic, cultural and other unspoken elements that an educator interacts with in an institutional setting and 2. the role of the institution in the process of intervening in both those psycho social factors and in what is known by a student. But even more than this, as conceived by its founder, Fernand Oury , Institutional Pedagogy is a constant calling into question of the institutional context itself. Thus the classroom is never a presupposed and static setting. The movement of Institutional Pedagody is thus in direct opposition to the prevailing trends of education prior to the late 1960s, almost all of which tended to homogenize socio cultural differences amongst learners, psycho social factors in learning and most important the presence of the unconscious in the classroom itself. Thus the use of institution in Institutional Pedagogy is broader than in its more colloquial sense. To Oury the institution could be defined as the places, moments, status of each according to his her level of performance, that is to say according to his her potentialities, the functions services, posts, responsibilities , roles president, secretary , diverse meetings team captains, different levels of classes, etc. , and the rituals that maintain their efficacy. Orphan date February 2009 Refimprove date June 2007 Institutional damage is broadly defined as unintended consequence s to an individual resulting from interaction with an institution which has responsibility for his or her care. The individual might be a hospital patient, a child in a school, or a prison Convict inmate . Some forms of institutional damage, such as medical error s and hospital acquired infection are relatively easily measured others, such as long term damage to development and mental health are significantly harder to measure. There is controversy as to whether such damage can be measured and if it actually occurs. It is not a widely used term, however, but it is a legal concept of considerable importance, because it is extremely common, particularly in countries where human rights of prisoners and other people under institutional care are not respected or guaranteed by law . Constitutional law , civil law common law and criminal law codices have many provisions to protect individuals against injuries caused by institutions to which they are unwillingly committed. The extent and the respect to these laws vary widely among countries and communities. These controversies relate to the old government versus individual debate which has permeated philosophy and political science since Ancient Greece . Damage to institutions The same expression is also used in the opposite sense, i.e., as damage caused to institutions, as opposed to damage caused to individuals. Co institutional schools employ a style of schooling wherein both male and female students study on the same campus but classes are single gender. Usually each division has its own building but may, on few occasions, use the facilities of the other division. Each division has its own administration and maintains its own courses, dress code, schedule, and other aspects. The two divisions may often share the same name. This system is founded on the belief that students learn better in a single gender environment. A co institutional school differs from a single sex school because it offers closer interaction between the two genders. Activities such as track and field , theater , Cross country running cross country , model UN , ultimate sport ultimate , mock trial , speech and debate , and multi cultural clubs are more successful under this system than they might otherwise be at a single sex school. Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Institutional dichotomy , according to John Federick Wolfenden, Baron Wolfenden John Wolfenden responsible for the Wolfenden Report , in his essay The Gap &mdash The Bridge , states that the dichotomization of intellectual disciplines by education al institutions, specifically college collegiate institutions , is to blame for the communication gap between specialists in different fields. Forced to pursue contrasting disciplines in college, students diverge from the broad educational background established in high school and pursue narrower studies. As a result, these students lose contact with the shared basis of their education as they venture into separate abstract studies. In effect, the communication gap of collegiate students widens as they become saturated with a curriculum of abstractions that relate to a single area of study. For instance, a college freshman chooses mathematics as his field of study while another chooses English language English . As they study, the two students become grossly out of touch as they adapt to new languages which will soon serve as a code in their future careers. The mathematics student becomes consumed by symbols and numbers while the English student immerses himself in a sea of classical literary style s and grammar grammatical mechanics. Consequently, the students soon become ill equipped to communicate with each other. The mathematics student now becomes illiterate by standards of the English major and the English major becomes innumerate by standards of the mathematics major.
