  1. Instruction prefetch

nofootnotes date January 2010 In computer architecture , instruction prefetch is a technique used in microprocessor s to speed up the execution of a program by reducing wait state s. Modern microprocessors are much faster than the Random access memory memory where the program is kept, meaning that the program s instructions cannot be read fast enough to keep the microprocessor busy. Adding a CPU cache cache can provide faster access to needed instructions. Prefetching occurs when a processor requests an instruction from Computer data storage Primary storage main memory before it is actually needed. Once the instruction comes back from memory, it is placed in a cache. When an instruction is actually needed, the instruction can be accessed much more quickly from the cache than if it had to make a request from memory. Since programs are generally executed sequentially, performance is likely to be best when instructions are prefetched in program order. Alternatively, the prefetch may be part of a complex branch prediction algorithm , where the processor tries to anticipate the result of a calculation and fetch the right instructions in advance. In the case of dedicated hardware like a Graphics Processing Unit the prefetch can take advantage of the spatial coherence usually found in the texture mapping process. In this case, the prefetched data are not instructions, but texture elements Texel graphics texels that are candidates to be mapped on a polygon . The first mainstream microprocessors to use some form of instruction prefetch were the Intel 8086 six bytes and the Motorola 68000 four bytes . 1. Macro instruction

Unreferenced date December 2009 A macro instruction is a line of computer program coding that results in one or more lines of program coding in the target programming language, sets variables for use by other statements, etc.. In the mid 1950s, when assembly language programming was commonly used to write programs for digital computers , the use of macro instructions was initiated for two main purposes to reduce the amount of program coding that had to be written by generating several assembly language statements from one macro instruction and to enforce program writing standards, e.g. specifying input output commands in standard ways. Macro instructions were effectively a middle step between assembly language programming and the high level programming languages that followed, such as FORTRAN and COBOL . Two of the earliest programming installations to develop macro languages for the IBM 705 computer were at Dow Chemical Corp. in Delaware and the Air Material Command, Ballistics Missile Logistics Office in California. A macro instruction written in the format of the target assembly language would be processed by a macro compiler, which was a pre processor to the assembler, to generate one or more assembly language instructions to be processed next by the assembler program that would translate the assembly language instructions into machine language instructions. While macro instructions can be defined by a programmer as a shorthand for any set of native assembler program instructions, typically macros are associated with macro libraries delivered with the operating system allowing ... constant instructions representing the parameters of the macro instruction such as a reference to a file and a data area for a READ instruction followed by either a branch and link instruction to call a routine, or a supervisor call instruction to call an operating system function directly. 1. Instruction creep

No footnotes date November 2010 selfref For the Wikipedia essay, see Wikipedia Avoid instruction creep . Instruction creep occurs when instructions increase in number and size over time until they are unmanageable. It can be insidious and damaging to the success of large groups such as corporations, originating from ignorance of the KISS principle and resulting in overly complex procedures that are often misunderstood, followed with great irritation, or ignored. The fundamental fallacy of instruction creep is believing that people read instructions with the same level of attention and comprehension, regardless of the volume or complexity of those instructions. A byproduct is the advent of many new rules having the deliberate intent to control others via wikt fiat Noun fiat , without considering consensus or collaboration. This tends to antagonize others, even when it appears to the instigators that they are acting with proper intent. Instruction creep is common in complex organizations, where rules and guidelines are created by changing groups of people over extended periods of time. The constant state of flux in such groups often leads them to add or modify instructions, rather than simplifying or consolidating existing ones. This can result in considerable overlap in the message of directives, at the expense of clarity, efficiency, and communication, or even of consistency. refimprove date May 2009 Golf instruction involves the teaching and learning of the game of golf . Proficiency in teaching golf instruction requires not only technical and physical ability, but also knowledge of the rules of golf rules and etiquette of the game . Golf instruction is best performed by recognised teachers certified by the relevant bodies in the United States, the recommended teachers are those who are PGA Class A Professionals although many of the greatest teachers are not affiliated to the PGA . Instructors use a combination of physical conditioning, mental visualization, classroom sessions, club fitting, driving range instruction, on course play under real conditions, and review of videotaped swings in slow motion to teach golf. Beginning players typically receive a series of lessons, in either a group or individual setting, covering the fundamentals of the golf swing and aspects of pitching, chipping, and putting. Experienced recreational players often return for instruction, either to fix a specific problem they are encountering or to improve their game. Reconstruction of a golf swing to reach a high level of play often involves series of lessons over an extended period of time. Junior golfers often begin receiving instruction by age 10 or younger, and often retain private teachers even when coached on a high school golf team. 1. Minimal instruction set computer

Original research date April 2011 Minimal Instruction Set Computer MISC is a Microprocessor processor architecture with a very small number of basic operations and corresponding opcode s. Such instruction set s are commonly stack based rather than register based to reduce the size of operand specifiers. Such a stack machine architecture is inherently simpler since all instructions operate on the top most stack entries. A result of this is a smaller instruction set, a smaller and faster instruction decode unit, and overall faster operation of individual instructions. The disadvantage is that instructions tend to have more sequential dependencies, reducing instruction level parallelism . MISC architectures have much in common with the Forth programming language and the Java Virtual Machine . Probably the most commercially successful MISC was the INMOS transputer . 1. Cycles per instruction

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 In computer architecture , cycles per instruction aka clock cycles per instruction , clocks per instruction , or CPI is a term used to describe one aspect of a central processing unit processor s performance the number of clock cycle s that happen when an Instruction computer science instruction is being executed. It is the multiplicative inverse of instructions per cycle . Explanation Let us assume a classic RISC pipeline , with the following 5 stages Instruction fetch cycle IF Instruction decode Register fetch cycle ID Execution Effective address cycle EX Memory access MEM Write back cycle WB Each stage requires one clock cycle and an instruction passes through the stages sequentially. Without pipelining , a new instruction is fetched in stage 1 only after the previous instruction finishes at stage 5. Therefore without pipelining the number of cycles it takes to execute an instruction is 5. This is the definition of CPI. With pipelining we can improve the CPI by exploiting instruction level parallelism . For example, what if an instruction is fetched every cycle? We could theoretically have 5 instructions in the 5 pipeline stages at once one instruction per stage . In this case, a different instruction would complete stage 5 in every clock cycle, and therefore on average we have one clock cycle per instruction CPI 1 . Unreferenced date December 2006 Merge Inquiry based learning date June 2009 Inquiry based instruction is a teaching technique in which teachers create situations in which students are to solve problems. Lessons are designed so that students make connections to previous knowledge, bring their own questions to learning, investigate to satisfy their own questions and design ways to try out their ideas. Such investigations may extend over a long period of time. Students communicate through journal writing, oral presentations, drawing, graphing, charting, etc. Students then revise their explanations as they learn. This technique is particularly popular in science instruction, but has also been used in a number of other subject matter areas including mathematics, engineering and even reading instruction. Overview NISC is a statically scheduled horizontal nanocoded architecture SSHNA . The term statically scheduled means that the operation scheduling and hazard handling are done by a compiler. The term horizontal nanocoded means that NISC does not have any predefined instruction set or microcode . The compiler generates nanocodes which directly control functional units, registers and multiplexers of a given datapath. Giving low level control to the compiler enables better utilization of datapath resources, which ultimately result in better performance. The benefits of NISC technology are Simpler controller no hardware scheduler, no instruction decoder Better performance more flexible architecture, better resource utilization Easier to design no need for designing instruction sets Instruction set and controller of processors are the most tedious and time consuming parts to design. By eliminating these two, design of custom processing elements become significantly easier. Furthermore, the datapath of NISC processors can even be generated automatically for a given application. Therefore, designers productivity is improved significantly. br Since NISC datapaths are very efficient and can be generated ... design technology evolved from complex instruction set computer CISC to reduced instruction ... languages. 1. Visual Instruction Set

Visual Instruction Set , or VIS , is a SIMD instruction set extension for SPARC SPARC V9 microprocessor s developed by Sun Microsystems . There are four versions of VIS VIS 1, VIS 2, VIS 2 , and VIS 3. ref cite web url http sun.com processors vis download mlib mlib wp.pdf title MT mediaLib for Chip MultiThreaded CMT Processors accessdate 2007 12 03 author Liang He coauthors Harlan McGhan month May year 2005 publisher Sun Microsystems, Inc. format PDF ref History VIS 1 was introduced in 1994 and was first implemented by Sun in their UltraSPARC microprocessor 1995 and by Fujitsu in their SPARC64 GP microprocessors 2000 . VIS 2 was first implemented by the UltraSPARC III . All subsequent UltraSPARC and SPARC64 microprocessors implement the instruction set. VIS 3 was first implemented in the SPARC T4 microprocessor. Differences vs x86 However VIS is not an instruction toolkit like Intel s MMX and SSE. MMX has only 8 registers shared with the Floating point unit FPU stack, while SPARC processors have 32 registers, also aliased to the double precision 64 bit floating pointer registers. As with the SIMD instruction set extensions on RISC processors, VIS strictly conform to the main principle of RISC keep the instruction set concise and efficient. This design is very different from comparable extensions on Complex instruction set computer CISC processors, such as MMX instruction set MMX , Streaming SIMD Extensions SSE , SSE2 , SSE3 , SSE4 , 3DNow . Sometimes programmers must use several VIS instructions to accomplish an operation that can be done with only one MMX instruction set MMX or Streaming SIMD Extensions SSE instruction, but it should be kept in mind that fewer instructions ... is more similar to the design of MMX instruction set MMX than other SIMD architectures such as Streaming ... app docs doc 816 1681 sparcv9 tbl 26?l all&a view UltraSPARC and VIS Instruction Set Extensions ... hardware Category SPARC microprocessor architecture no Visual Instruction Set ru Visual Instruction ...   more details
