In mathematics, the Pfeffer integral is an integration technique created by Washek Pfeffer as an attempt to extend the Henstock integral to a multidimensional domain. This was to be done in such a way that the fundamental theorem of calculus would apply analogously to the theorem in one dimension, with as few preconditions on the function under consideration as possible. The integral also permits analogues of the chain rule and other theorems of the integral calculus for higher dimensions. Definition The construction is based on the Henstock or gauge integral, however Pfeffer proved that the integral, at least in the one dimensional case, is less general than the Henstock integral. It relies on what Pfeffer refers to as a set of bounded variation , this is equivalent to a Caccioppoli set . The Riemann sums of the Pfeffer integral are taken over partitions made up of such sets, rather than intervals as in the Riemann or Henstock integrals. A gauge is used, exactly as in the Henstock integral, except that the gauge function may be zero on a negligible set. Properties Pfeffer defined a notion of generalized absolute continuity math ACG math , close to but not equal to the definition of a function being math ACG math , and proved that a function is Pfeffer integrable iff it is the derivative of an math ACG math function. He also proved a chain rule for the Pfeffer integral. In one dimension his work as well as similarities between the Pfeffer integral and the McShane integral indicate that the integral is more general than the Lebesgue integral and yet less general than the Henstock integral . main PID controller Integral windup refers to the situation in a PID controller where a large change in setpoint occurs say a positive change and the integral terms accumulates a significant error during the rise windup , thus overshoot signal overshooting and continuing to increase as this accumulated error is unwound offset by errors in the other direction . The specific problem is the excess overshooting. Solutions This problem can be addressed by Initialising the controller integral to a desired value Increasing the setpoint in a suitable ramp Disabling the integral function until the to be controlled process variable PV has entered the controllable region Limiting the time period over which the integral error is calculated Preventing the integral term from accumulating above or below pre determined bounds Occurrence Integral windup particularly occurs as a limitation of physical systems, compared with ideal systems, due to the ideal output being physically impossible process Wiktionary saturation saturation the output of the process being limited at the top or bottom of its scale, making the error constant . For example the position of a valve cannot be any more open than fully open and also cannot be closed anymore than fully closed. In this case integral windup can actually involve the integrator being turned off for periods of time until the response falls back into an acceptable range. This usually occurs when the controller s output can no longer affect the controlled variable, or if the controller is part of a selection scheme and it is selected right. Integral windup was more of a problem in analog electronics analog controllers. In mathematics , the Daniell integral is a type of integration that generalizes the concept of more elementary versions such as the Riemann integral to which students are typically first introduced. One of the main difficulties with the traditional formulation of the Lebesgue integral is that it requires the initial development of a workable measure theory before any useful results for the integral ... a few significant advantages over the traditional formulation, especially as the integral is generalized into higher dimensional spaces and further generalizations such as the Stieltjes integral . In mathematics , the Pettis integral or Gelfand&ndash Pettis integral , named after Israel Gelfand I. M. Gelfand and Billy James Pettis B.J.
