context date January 2011 Although sometimes dynamic strain aging is used interchangeably with the Portevin Le Chatelier effect or serrated yielding , dynamic strain aging refers specifically to the microscopic mechanism that induces the Portevin Le Chatelier effect. This Strengthening mechanisms of materials strengthening mechanism is related to solid solution strengthening solid solution strengthening and has been observed in a variety of Cubic crystal system fcc and bcc substitutional and interstitial alloys, metalloids like silicon, and ordered intermetallics within specific ranges of temperature and strain rate . ref name one Mesarovic, Sinisa 1995 Dynamic Strain Aging and Plastic Instabilities. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 43 671 701 No. 5 ref Description of Mechanism In materials, the motion of dislocation s is a discontinuous process. When dislocation meets obstacles like forest dislocations they are temporary arrested for a certain time. During this time solutes such as interstitial particles diffuse around the dislocations further strengthening the obstacles held on the dislocations. Eventually these dislocations will overcome these obstacles with sufficient stress and will quickly move to the next obstacle where they are stopped and the process can repeat again. ref name two Van Den Beukel, A. 1975 Theory of the Effect of Dynamic Strain Aging on Mechanical Properties . Ion Beam Mixing is a process for adhering two multilayers, especially a Substrate materials science substrate and Thin film deposition deposited surface layer. The process involves bombarding layered samples with doses of Particle radiation ion radiation in order to promote Mixture mixing at the interface, and generally serves as a means of preparing electrical junctions, especially between non equilibrium or Metastability in molecules metastable alloys and Intermetallics intermetallic compounds. Ion implantation equipment can be used to achieve ion beam mixing. Mechanism The unique effects that stem from ion beam mixing are primarily a result of Ballistics ballistic effects that is, impinging ions have high Kinetic energy kinetic energies that are transferred to target atoms on collision. Ion energies can be seen on the order of 1 k Electronvolt eV to 200 keV. When accelerated, such ion energies are sufficiently high to break Chemical bond intra and especially Intermolecular force inter molecular bonds, and initiate relocations within an Crystal structure atomic lattice . The sequence of collisions is known as a collision cascade . During this ballistic process, energies of impinging ions displace atoms and electrons of the target material several lattice sites away, resulting in relocations there and interface mixing at the boundary layer. Note that energies must be sufficiently high in order for the lattice rearrangements to be permanent rather than manifesting as mere vibrational responses to the impinging radiation, i.e. the kinetic energies must be above the threshold displacement energy of the material. If energies are kept sufficiently high in these nuclear collisions, then, compared to traditional high dose implantation processes, ballistic ion implantation produces higher intrafilm alloy concentrations at lower doses of irradiation compared to conventional implantation processes.
