  1. Naming conventions of the International Phonetic Alphabet

No footnotes date April 2009 The International Phonetic Alphabet requires specific names for the symbols and diacritics used in the alphabet. It is often desirable to distinguish an IPA symbol from the sound it is intended to represent, since there is not a one to one correspondence between symbol and sound in broad transcription. The symbol s names and phonetic descriptions are described in the Handbook of the International Phonetic Association . The symbols also have nonce names in the Unicode standard. In some cases, the Unicode names and the IPA names do not agree. For example, IPA calls IPA epsilon , but Unicode calls it small letter open E . The letters The traditional names of the Latin and Greek letters are used for unmodified symbols. In Unicode, some of the symbols of Greek origin have Latin forms for use in IPA the others use the symbols from the Greek section. 1. Obsolete and nonstandard symbols in the International Phonetic Alphabet

The International Phonetic Alphabet IPA possess a variety of obsolete and nonstandard symbols . Throughout the history of the IPA , characters representing phonetic values have been modified or completely replaced. An example is IPA for standard IPA . Several symbols indicating secondary articulation have been dropped altogether, with the idea that such things should be indicated with diacritics IPA for IPA z is one. In addition, the rare voiceless implosive series IPA has been dropped. Other characters have been added in for specific phonemes which do not possess a specific symbol in the IPA. Those studying modern Chinese phonology have used IPA to represent IPA z , a vowel which represents the i in hanzi see Pinyin . There are also unsupported symbols from local traditions that find their way into publications that otherwise use the standard IPA. This is especially common with affricates such as IPA , and many Americanist phonetic notation Americanist symbols. While the IPA does not itself have a set of capital letters the ones that look like capitals are actually small capital s , many languages have adopted symbols from the IPA as part of their orthographies, and in such cases they have invented capital variants of these. This is especially common in Africa. An example is Kabiy language Kabiy of northern Togo , which has Unicode capital IPA . Other pseudo IPA capitals supported by Unicode are Unicode . Google transliteration formerly Google Indic Transliteration is a transliteration typing service for Indian and others languages. This tool first appeared in Blogger service Blogger , Google s popular blogging service http blogger.com hindi . Later on it came into existence as a separate online tool. Keeping in view its popularity it was embedded in GMail and Orkut . In December 2009 Google released its offline version named Google IME . This tool from Google is based on dictionary based phonetic transliteration approach. In contrast to older Indic typing tools which type by transliterating under a particular scheme , it transliterates by matching the Latin words with an inbuilt dictionary. So, users do not need to remember the transliteration scheme due to which this service is very easy and suitable for first beginners. 1. Buckwalter transliteration

The Buckwalter Romanization of Arabic Arabic transliteration was developed at Xerox by Tim Buckwalter in the 1990s. It is an ASCII only transliteration scheme, representing Arabic orthography strictly one to one, unlike the more common romanization schemes that add morphological information not expressed in Arabic script. Thus, for example, a waw letter transl ar DIN w w will be transliterated as w regardless of whether it is realized as a vowel IPA u or a consonant IPA w . Only when the transl ar DIN w w is modified by a transl ar DIN hamza h lang ar does the transliteration change to & . The unmodified letters are straightforward to read except for dhaal and E ayin, v thaa , but the transliterations of letters with diacritics and the harakat take some time to get used to, for example the nunation nunated transl ar DIN un, an, in appear as N, F, K , and the transl ar DIN suk n no vowel as o . transl ar DIN Ta marb ah lang ar is p .
