The union was founded in 1921 as the National Union of Printing, Bookbinding, Machine Ruling and Paper Workers when the National Union of Bookbinders and Machine Rulers and the National Union of Printing and Paper Workers merged. The Platen Printing Machine Minders Society and the London Society of Machine Rulers soon also joined. In 1926, its central London branch broke away, but rejoined in 1931. The intention was to create a powerful international organisation, which would extend its ramifications to the remotest corner of the globe . The movement was granted the patronage of the International Committee of the Red Cross , and the Council included two prominent members of that body, including its Head of Secretariat, Etienne Clouzot. It brought together organisations from various countries that were initially working to tackle child suffering around Europe after World War I . The International Clearing Union ICU was one of the institutions proposed to be set up at the 1944 United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire by British people British economist John Maynard Keynes . Its aim was to have been regulation of currency exchange, a role eventually taken by the International Monetary Fund IMF . The International Clearing Union ICU would be a global bank whose job would be to regulate trade between nations. All international trade would be denominated in its own currency, the proposed bancor . The bancor was to have had a fixed exchange rate with national currencies, and would have been used to measure the balance of trade between nations. Every good exported would add bancors to a country s account, every good imported would subtract them. Each nation would be Incentives Incentive in economics incentivized to keep their bancor balance close to zero. If a nation had too high a bancor surplus the ICU would take a percentage of that surplus and put it into the Clearing Union s Foreign exchange reserves Reserve Fund this would encourage nations with surpluses to buy other nations exports. Nations that imported more than they exported would have their currency depreciated against the bancor encouraging other nations to buy their products, and making imports more expensive. George Monbiot , a contemporary critic of the IMF, has argued that the ICU s proposed mechanisms would have given greater weight in decision making to the less developed countries, which were not then as heavily involved in international trade as they are now ... The Internation Union of Microbiological Societies or IUMS , founded in 1927 as the International Society of Microbiology, is now one of 27 Scientific Unions As of 2005 lc on of the International Council of Science ICSU . The objectives of the Union are to promote the study of microbiological sciences internationally initiate, facilitate and coordinate research and other scientific activities which involve international cooperation ensure the discussion and dissemination of the results of international conferences, symposia and meetings and assist in the publication of their reports represent microbiological sciences in ICSU and maintain contact with other international organizations. IUMS activities include the classification and nomenclature of bacteria, fungi and viruses, food microbiology, medical microbiology and diagnostics, culture collections, education, and biological standardization. The IUMS has three divisions Bacteriology and Applied Microbiology BAM Mycology Virology These divisions each have their own set of officers and objectives. Each division is responsible for the organization of their own International Congresses. They work together toward the goal of furthering microbiology research and communication globally.
