A resource bundle is a Java software platform Java .properties file that contains locale specific data. ref http java.sun.com developer technicalArticles Intl ResourceBundles O Conner, B. Java Internationalization Localization with ResourceBundles , Sun Developer Network. ref It is a way of internationalising a Java application by making the code locale independent. Benefits of using resource bundles Extracting locale sensitive objects such as strings from the code as opposed to hard coding them means that the application can handle multiple locales without having to write different code for each locale. It also means that translators can deal with just the translatable text and not the programming code. Therefore, using resource bundles improves the internationalisation and the Internationalization and localization localisation process of a software product. Unreferenced date September 2007 Byte orientation refers to forms of data processing in which digital data are processed byte wise. For example, communication is called byte oriented or character oriented when the transmitted information is grouped into byte s. The latter term is deprecated, since the notion of character computing character has changed. An ASCII character fits to one byte octet computing octet in terms of the amount of information. With the internationalization of computer software, wide character s became necessary, to handle texts in different languages. In particular, Unicode characters can be 8, 16, or 32 bits long, i.e., 1, 2, or 4 bytes. Byte oriented transmission makes use of byte oriented protocol s, that may involve transmission of additional bits as terminators, means of error recovery, etc. Another approaches, alternative to byte oriented , are bit oriented this opposition resemble a distinction of binary file binary and text file s and word oriented . Unreferenced date June 2009 Pseudolocalization is a software testing method that is used to test Internationalization and localization internationalization aspects of software. Specifically, it brings to light potential difficulties with localization by replacing localizable text particularly in a graphical user interface with text that imitates the most problematic characteristics of text from a wide variety of language s, and by forcing the application to deal with similar input text. If used properly, it provides a cheap but effective sanity test for localizability that can be helpful in the early stages of a software project. Rationale If software is not designed with localizability in mind, certain problems can occur when the software is localized. Text in a target language may tend to be significantly longer than the corresponding text in the original language of the program, causing the ends of text to be cut off if insufficient space is allocated. Words in a target language may be longer, causing awkward line breaks. In addition, individual characters in a target language may require more space, causing Diacritic modified characters to be cut off vertically, for example. Even worse, characters of a target language may fail to render properly or at all if support for an appropriate font is not included. This is a larger problem for legacy software than for newer programs. On the input side, programmers may make inappropriate assumptions about the form that user input can take. Method For small changes to mature software products, for which a large amount of target text is already available, directly testing several target languages may be the best option. For newer software or for larger user interface changes , however, waiting for text to be translated can introduce a significant lag into the testing schedule. In addition, it may not be cost effective to translate ... 7 for a Global Market reflist Category Software testing Category Internationalization and localization ... more details
