In descriptive statistics , the interquartilerange IQR , also called the midspread or middle fifty , is a measure of statistical dispersion , being equal to the difference between the upper and lower quartile s. ref cite book title Understanding Statistics authors Graham Upton and Ian Cook year 1996 publisher Oxford University Press isbn 0199143919 page 55 url http books.google.com books?id vXzWG09 SzAC&pg PA55&dq interquartilerange v onepage&q interquartile 20range&f false ref IQR Q sub 3 sub Q sub 1 sub Use Unlike total range statistics range , the interquartilerange is a robust statistic , having a breakdown point of 25 , and is thus often preferred to the total range. The IQR is used to build box plot s, simple graphical representations of a probability distribution . For a symmetric distribution where the median equals the midhinge , the average of the first and third quartiles , half the IQR equals the median absolute deviation MAD . The median is the corresponding measure of central tendency . The IQM is a truncated mean and so is very similar to the scoring method used in sports that are evaluated by a panel of judges discard the lowest and the highest scores calculate the mean value of the remaining scores . Calculation In calculation of the IQM, only the interquartilerange is used, and the lowest 25 and the highest 25 of the scores are discarded. These points are called the first and third quartile s, see talk page hence the name of the IQM. Note that the second quartile is also called the median . math x mathrm IQM 2 over n sum i frac n 4 1 frac 3n 4 x i math assuming the values have been ordered. Examples Dataset divisible by four The method is best explained with an example. Consider the following dataset 5, 8, 4, 38, 8, 6, 9 ... and the interquartile dataset Consider the following dataset of 9 observations 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 There are 9 4 2.25 observations in each quartile, and 4.5 observations in the interquartilerange. The Range buildings run parallel to and face away from the Lawn , and are separated from the Lawn by a series of ten gardens five per side . There are six hotels on the Range, three on each side. Originally used as dining facilities, the hotels today fill a variety of purposes, including administrative office space, home of The Virginia Quarterly Review , home to the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society , and a reception hall. The Range rooms serve as graduate student housing. They are furnished identically to undergraduate Lawn rooms. Previous well known Range residents include Edgar Allan Poe 13 West Range and Woodrow Wilson 31 West Range . During his residence in 13 West Range, Poe allegedly etched his initials into a pane of window glass a pane that has since been shattered. Visitors to the West Range can peer inside Poe s room, which is furnished in the style of his era and maintained by the Raven Society , and listen to a brief recording that describes Poe s time at the University. A glass doorway preserves the historic quality of the room. Thirteen West Range is open to the public once each year during Historic Garden Week . Unreferenced date December 2009 In the descriptive statistics , the range is the length of the smallest interval which contains all the data. It is calculated by subtracting the smallest observation sample minimum from the greatest sample maximum and provides an indication of statistical dispersion . It is measured in the same units as the data. Since it only depends on two of the observations, it is a poor and weak measure of dispersion except when the sample size is large. For a population, the range is greater than or equal to twice the standard deviation , with equality only for the coin toss Bernoulli distribution with p . The range, in the sense of the difference between the highest and lowest scores, is also called the crude range . When a new scale for measurement is developed, then a potential maximum or minimum will emanate from this scale. This is called the potential crude range . Of course this range should not be chosen too small, in order to avoid a ceiling effect . When the measurement is obtained, the resulting smallest or greatest observation, will provide the observed crude range . The midrange point, i.e. the point halfway between the two extremes, is an indicator of the central tendency of the data. Again it is not particularly robust for small samples.
